Boston magazine annoints Roslindale one of the best places to live

And the best part for me: They only mentioned two small parts of the neighborhood, which means the rest of us don't have to worry about the monied classes driving our property taxes up.

I think the author of that article....

...did not do too much research on the price of houses in the Peters Hill area -- I would bet that these are pricier than Ms. Bowers thinks they are (more expensive than most parts of JP, I would suspect). The Roslindale average of $329K would not buy much over near the Arboretum.

Meh, doesn't matter

The typical Boston reader is not going to be moving to Roslindale no matter what, so they're not really going to care about Roslindale except to get a little chuckle. Unless Boston has really changed since the last time I picked up a copy.

OK - so let's actually take a

OK - so let's actually take a look. Two blocks from the Arboretum on Primrose st., the first house I check is a single family, assessed at $363K.

Now let's look at another single family house in JP. Lamartine st. - far from the Arboretum or the pond - or even Franklin Park. Small house, probably built in the 1870s, near the tracks, right up the street from Stony Brook station, where a guy was shot playing basketball, and where there's been a series of muggings on the street, assessed at $780K.

Assessment values

aren't anywhere near market values. I'm currently assessed at $193K. I bought in 2005 for $279K and refinanced in 2007 with a value of $310K. Housing values have gone down a bit in the past few years, but not THAT much. They assess way low so they don't have to deal with people calling and nitpicking about being overassessed.

If you want to look at actual housing values, look at Zillow. It pulls from the actual sale prices. Then look at suffolkdeeds.com for the actual sales documents if the particular house isn't pulling up. Or ask John Keith.

Did you see the article

they published about educating your children in Boston? http://www.bostonmagazine.com/articles/navigating_the_boston_public_schools_system/

Again, the neighborhoods of Boston that go beyond Back Bay, Beacon Hill and South End are treated as foreign places. It's almost like the writers have never been to some of our neighborhoods. However, the article is a fairly balanced look at how people educate their kids in Boston.

The article is about a family in Jamaica Plain

so I don't understand where your statement is coming from.

Sorry, I wasn't being clear.

The article is about families who choose to stay in Boston and either educate their kids via Boston Public Schools or other means. It is not specifically about Roslindale but lots of families in this part of Boston (JP-Roslindale-West Rox) are in those situations and since Boston Magazine normally ignores urban school issues or recommends you move to Newton, UHub readers might be interested.

Really, Ron?

I think the connection is mainstream media covering the neighborhoods that aren't downtown.

Always a good time to buy

Soon enough

A Whole Foods is on its way!

But the Globe

said Egleston Sq was experiencing a renaissance a little while back. So many choices!

Hyde Park

...the next Roslindale!

Well... I guess they had to

Well... I guess they had to pick SOME place, and there aren't THAT many villages in Boston from which to choose. Where else would they say? Effing Brighton? LOL.

I really wish I understood the appeal of living in the City of Boston. It is like the negatives of Brooklyn without the offsetting positives of New York City. Throw in the disgusting Boston townie xenophobic mentality, and you have a nightmarish recipe.

As a recovering Brooklynite

All I can say is: Fine, stay away from Boston, more room for the rest of us.

Please go back to Brooklyn.

Please go back to Brooklyn. The average IQ in Boston and Brooklyn will both go up.

What's the problem with Brighton Center?

Brighton along Comm Ave. does suck but Brighton Center grew on me. Almost no undergrads, good local merchants, just need a few yuppy restaurants.

Roslindale? Seriously?

Roslindale? Seriously? hahahaha
