Citizen complaint of the day: How can they drink that stuff?

An alert citizen reported an urgent situation at the Back Bay MBTA station:
Screaming woman and two men drinking a bottle of Listerine.
Drinking Listerine straight? Not on the rocks, at least? Alas, nothing the city could do but forward the complaint to the T, since it's their jurisdiction.

Poor Man's Dr. McGillicuddy's?
Why pay $15 for 750 mL of Mentholmint Schnapps when you could pay $3 for twice as much by buying a bottle of Listerine instead?
Hell, Listerine is 27% abv whereas McGillicuddy's is only 24%!!

Listerine: the hobo's preventive for alcohol withdrawal syndrome
Ethanol-containing mouthwash gets many late-stage alcoholics through the morning period when last night's drunk has worn off and the liquor stores and bars have not yet opened. It can keep them from suffering withdrawal seizures or DTs. Its consumption this way used to be more commonplace on Monday mornings when most MA liquor stores were closed on Sundays. Yep, that's sad.
Witch Hazel
I knew some desperate folks who would take a shot of witch hazel. I'm sure it was not a good idea, overall, but labeling used to (may still) read something along the lines of "use as an oral astringent", so the assumption was that swallowing some wouldn't be fatal.

I was once accosted at the library by a man called Listerine Jack. Oddly enough, downing an entire bottle of Listerine made this guy's breath even worse than it probably was before.

theyll drink anything. they hit bottom years ago. but they do
love each otherand have each other. thats all they have.
