City council to sink teeth into expired frozen food at Boston schools

City Councilor John Connolly will grill Boston Public School officials about the expired frozen food he recently found in the freezers at some local schools.

Connolly, chairman of the council's education committee, expects school officials to dish up an explanation at a hearing this coming Tuesday, starting at 11 a.m. in the council's fifth-floor chambers at City Hall.

Although school officials said the food was safe, Connolly's order for the hearing questions whether it meets the criteria of "healthy and appealing meal choices for students," that BPS promises on its Web site. The order also suggests a discussion on "unsafe food practices [that] could compromise the safety and welfare of students" and says that "parents and students have a right to be informed about inventory quality control efforts."
