Cops shut Newbury Street as rap fans riot outside Newbury Comics

An appearance by Tyler the Creator got everybody all riled up, scuffles broke out, one cop got hurt. Or so we hear from our safe aerie here in remotest Roslindale. Photo. Another photo. And another.

Ashley Glover reports from the scene:

Screaming, "fuck the police" at cops who are angrily herding you, and 100s of other teens, seems like an overly bold move for Newbury St.

Only an hour earlier, Kathy Griffin strollled Newbury, but failed to generate a threatening mob of kids. By the time the rowdies erupted, Griffin was safely across the river, outside an MIT men's room.

This makes me feel very old because:

1) Tyler the who? what?

2) It makes me want to go, "Hey remember that time there was a riot at a Green Day concert on the Hatch Shell?" Except no one probably does, because it was FIFTEEN YEARS AGO.

Tyler the Creator, as in the lead guy in Odd Future Wolfgang Kill Them All, aka Odd Future or OFWKTA.

when Kaz doesn't post the same thing a few hours earlier. The olds aren't faring well in this one. This is why me and my Werther's Originals are staying on the sidelines.

There was an incident of "cops attacking people for dancing because it made them all tingly".

1. He's the leader of a collective called Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (usually just called Odd Future), who -- for the benefit of my fellow Olds -- are basically the kidzz' version of Wu-Tang. After a couple of years' worth of underground buzz, he finally released his first proper album this week and he's in the middle of something of a backlash because...well, it's not actually all that great. He's got skills, it's just that this particular album feels a little lazy. (In particular, if you remember Prince Paul's early '90s project Gravediggaz, there's a LOT of that in this album.)

2. What will really make you feel old is that he's like 19.

OK, that was helpful! I have heard of Odd Future, although I have been waiting on actually listening to them because the hype so far is the same thing I've heard five thousand times before (because I am Old).

Nineteen is okay--it's still too old for me to have given birth to him. Although it does mean he was in diapers when that Green Day riot happened in 1994.

Also: I don't remember Gravediggaz, but your mention of Prince Paul has inspired me to dig up my Handsome Boy Modeling School albums. And remember the days when I was cool.

"the kids version of Wu Tang" makes me feel old.

Gravediggaz: You mean that dumb as shit that Russell Simmons put together for like five seconds to keep gettin' paid and givin' Kimwhora her cab money on the regular? The one Tyler already clowned because lazy-ass white "music media" can't think of enough adjectives to describe OFWGKTA? Oh wait, that's Wu Tang.

Talkin' bout lazy. Old fat lazy ass writers just keep spoutin shit about Gravediggaz and Wu like they thought of that shit first -- or like Gravediggaz and Wu wasn't some shit a label just made up and made tapes for to buy more cris or whatever they were drinkin then.

That's cool. Stay old as hell.

You want us to stop comparing you to Gravediggaz and Wu, maybe you should stop biting Gravediggaz and Wu. Ain't my fault you're ripping them off wholesale, and I'll keep pointing that out as long as you do. You have a nice day now, hear?

Yea, all about that "horrorcore." Love that shit. Rhymes bout fairy tales and pits of snakes. Yea, bitin that!

And Wu! Ha! More than one dude rhymin' and yall think it's the Wu Tang doin' some 20 year old shit older than your daughter. Yea, lots of bitin there. Lotsa clowny ass names n DefJam contracts and video shuckin and jivin and okeyjokin ODB records and shit... hahaha. Yea, you got it. Now write some story in some old weakly the brahs read... funny man. Yall so mad you cant throw shit at Green Day shows no more.

I am so entertained by:

1) Your diction.
2) Your continued use of "old" as an insult when for all I know you're a 40-year-old accountant living in Milton.
3) That you're pressed about something other than the T, bicycles, local politics, or neighborhood boundaries. Seriously, how did you even find this site?

From what little I have heard, Odd Future has a lot more in common with the Insane Clown Posse than they do with Wu-Tang.

I was way in the back, so had no idea what happend. Of course everyone I talked to after the set was cut short said they "were right up front". Seriously, everyone. So finally, I started telling people I too was right up front. They of course countered with "I was on the stage, maaaan!"

Fun fact: The Meices were the opening band.

Haha, reminds me of a local club where I grew up which once had a performance by The Police before they hit it big where only like ten people showed up because of a blizzard. Of course after the Police became big, everyone started claiming they were one of those ten people.

I remember, I was there..it was Sept 1994! That was crazy! Kids were throwing bottles and rocks at State Troopers. I got the hell outta there quick!

If a bunch of people are just standing around and cops in full riot gear just start herding people around, who's doing the "rioting." They had a term for what went on in Watts, Detroit and Newark back in the 1960s -- it was called a "police riot." I think of this every time the streets around the Garden or Fenway fill with black-clad stormtroopers around playoff time or when cops value property (a flipped-over pickup truck) over human life (a girl murdered with a rubber bullet to the face).

Chicago 68 was a police riot.
None of the riots you cite were.
They were merely riots set off by police actions.
The police weren't actually rioting.

Read Ron Porambo's No Cause for Indictment if you weren't in Newark at the time, instead of spouting ignorance. The Newark Police spent the "riot" shooting people in the back, opening fire on public housing while targeting nonexistent "snipers," bludgeoning Amiri Baraka and his friends to within an inch of their lives and being restrained by the National Guard before they could do any more damage.

Watts and Detroit had similar stories, but since there were no white college kids there (except Tom Hayden, who just happens to be in the wrong place at the right time a lot in the 60s) I guess you just choose to ignore it. Besides, the Chicago 7's a lot sexier story and not nearly as messy as the 26 killed in Newark, the 43 killed in Detroit and 34 killed in Watts.

Maybe you should ask your professor to go over that part of your history/cultural studies/misappropriation of 60s social rebellions course again. Then you might know something beyond the jack shit your ignorant hide is smearing all over this comments field.

Settle down, Gramps.
I know what the police did DURING the riots in Newark, Watts and Detroit.
But they weren't rioting, per se, they were reacting to rioters.
Sniping isn't rioting.

I mentioned Chicago not b/c it's sexier or b'c the police victims were white students.
I cited it b/c the whole thing went down b/c the police rioted and started the violence on the crowd.
That's what a police riot is. That's where the name comes from- from the report on Chicago.

Not a long culmination of police brutality (and other factors) that then led to rioting and lethal police response.

All of the other late 60's inner city riots were more lethal and stemmed from more egregious circumstances than Chicago. That's not the point.

Wikipedia:

"Criticism

Tyler, the Creator has been criticized for his use of homophobic slurs. In particular, his frequent use of the epithet "faggot" in his lyrics and official Twitter account.[11] E.g., "Just walked into Abercrombie with my sister cause she wants a shirt. It smells like faggot in here."[12][13]"

Welcome to Boston - I'm sure you'll feel at home here.

Actually, a lot of people don't use the term 'faggot' to mean a gay man anymore, it's the 21st century and people are very accepting now. I'm guilty myself of using that word a lot and I have a lot of gay friends. I'm not homophobic at all.
Today, it basically means a douche-bag or a stereotypical frat guy, you know, the self tanned "jacked" bodies that where polos with the collar flipped up (or the double collar), or a t-shirt that's too small, They 'whoop' and hollar a lot while attempting to throw gang signs. They claim they're into 'chicks' all the time, but love to act gay with one another (slapping each others asses, 'bromance', shirtless parties). For example, the frat guys that live in the house next to me throw shirtless parties and the entire night you can hear them screaming "Woo!! No Chicks Allowed!!" while playing beer pong.

Tyler the creator COULD be homophobic, I don't know, I don't listen to his music, but for all I know it just sounds like the average 19 year old referring to what I said above.

Keep it to yourself, kid.

This is only the early 21st century and a lot of people still know the word's original meaning, even if some of you think it's OK to use the previous generation's slurs.

Also, one thing that hasn't gone out of style yet: People who say they have a lot of [X] friends are engaging in some serious denial. Just ask Donald Trump about all his marvelous black friends.

Buddy, you're out of touch with reality if you think using homophobic slurs is now acceptable and/or homophobic slurs have lost their meaning. Um, WRONG. Next!

We'd love to show you that shit, but the cops in Boston are on some bullshit about not being able to videotape them with audio. Somethin' about voyeurism, which is cool because they can strongarm 14-year-old girls n shit but bein' on camera's way dangerous. I ain't mad at 'em, but it's hilarious when y'all get all mad because your weird uncle's a cop and the word n bruises of a few thousand people don't mean shit when you can get drunk at DateRape O'Malley's with him and talk about those crazy ass kids just you 'n' him.

Funny that dude thinks this is politics. Too much Fox huntin'.

One arrest and one cop with "no serious injuries" at this "riot," according to Fox 25. This is what Fox got for its "riot coverage," BTW. Local news diggin' for clues on a slow news day... and they know their "story" sucked.
