According to someone who witnessed the accident, the driver of the SUV drove head-on into the snow removal equipment. I saw a cell phone pic of the accident and it looked like a big loader, not a backhoe. Based on the damage to the SUV, the driver must have been going pretty fast.

We don't want them to have to record another stern safety lecture for those of us waiting for a T train!

Wasn't one message from Registrar Rachel Kaprielian enough?

I live right there. there was a backhoe and a front loader. I am not sure which it hit but the entire roof was taken off by it. The driver was unconscious and was removed from the car by EMTs.

THE OPERATOR OF THE FRONT LOADER NOT ONLY WAS WARNED A HALF HOUR PREVIOUS BY RESIDENTS FOR BEING UNSAFE IT TURNS OUT HIS CDL LICENSE WAS SUSPENDED. THE DRIVER KILLED NEVER HAD A CHANCE. THE OPERATOR PULLED ACROSS THE LANE AND TOOK THE WHOLE TOP OFF. THESE MACHINES ARE WORK HORSES AND DONT BELONG ON THE STREETS ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT WITHOUT A POLICE DETAIL.THE FRONT ENDS OF THESE THINGS WHEN RAISED CAN CUT THROUGH JUST ABOUT ANYTHING WITH EASY SO 40MPH IS MORE THAN ENOUGH SPEED TO CUT IT IN HALF. TRAGIC ACCIDENT THAT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED, SHOULD BE BROUGHT UP ON MANSLAUGHTER CHARGES.

DO YOU DO WEATHER FORECASTS TOO?

Kidding aside, you raise a good point. If you so much as dig around your nose with your finger without a police detail you get crap (from the police not on your finger). Why is it that some people can get away without it? This would be one of the cases where it would have been a good thing. Hell, even civilian flaggers would have most likely have prevented this.

please...the backho is bright yellow with enough lights to pass as a ufo and a back up alarm, people drive too crazy and assume machines can see them. The guy also has current valid license so get facts strait! Not saying there shouldnt be a cop but thats on the city and not the contractor and when drivers dont see a cop at a worksite they drive way to aggressive

True there are some people that do drive crazy. But also these contractors constantly work 24 hr shifts to suck up all this overtime. They make truckers rest after 10 hrs. And the act like they own the road and people will stop at all costs since they can do so much damage. There was no time to react cause the frontloader went straight into the other lane..edward was on the other side of the street. Not even turning onto the street the loader was working on. He had the right away bottom line and was well within the speed limit.

The workers only work 8 hour shifts the suv crossed over the double line and turned an 18000 pound machine sideways so u tell me how fast and crazy the suv was driving he put everyones life in danger when he got behind the wheel

either your trying to cover up for your company or a coworker or whatever. anyone that does this type of work constantly works insane hours. i hear it all the time when they call into to these radio stations about working damn near full day shifts. even interviews on the news. and you can also see by the other comments that people were questioning the practices of the operators. bottom line when you work heavy machinery safety is number 1. you seem to be the only one sticking up for the operator. not good odds when most of the key witnesses are stating different in police reports.

I'm not sticking up for anyone but if you read about the crash the driver died on the way to the hospital. The drivers you are talking about in news interviews are guys plowing privately not with the city. But your right safety is number 1 and driving careful when you see construction vehicles is also important. You have to be driving fast to turn a machine like that 30-40 mph I don't think would turn a machine like that.

So (at least) one liar here. Either the "friend of" first anon or the later anon is making up a story about the death of another human being.

Way to be a complete and utter piece of shit, anon.

THE TRUTH WILL COME OUT. WONT BE THAT HARD FOR POLICE TO FIGURE IT OUT BASED ON THE IMPACT POINT IN THE ROAD. SUV HAD THE RIGHT AWAY AND THE FRONT LOADER CAME INTO HIS LANE. ONE OF HIS FRIENDS WAS FOLLOWING BEHIND HIM AND MADE THE 911 CALL. DRIVER DIED INSTANTLY AS THE MACHINE CRUSHED PART OF HIS HEAD. NEIGHBORS WERE OUT AND ALSO WITNESSED THIS HORRIFIC ACCIDENT AND IT MATCHES FROM WHAT THE KEY WITNESS IN THE CAR FOLLOWING SAW. (IN CASE SOMEONE JUST ASSUMES HE IS STICKING UP FOR HIS FRIEND)UNSURE THOUGH IF THIS IS A CONTRACTOR OR CITY WORKER THOUGH.

Terrible tragedy I can't get the sounds or images out of my head. I was looking out the window before the accident to see what all of the commotion was outside. I did say to myself how fast these men were working. They were going back and forth so fast between picking up snow and dumping it. Hopefully they will be more careful next time.
