Updated Saturday morning.

A crumbling building on Chelsea Street collapsed completely late Friday night, sending pieces of itself flying across the street.

Police ordered Chelsea Street closed late Friday after 47 Chelsea St. finally gave way. The neighboring 45 Chelsea "has some issues" as well, the Boston Fire Department reports:

On October 11th, we evacuated 45 Chelsea St. because we thought 47 was unstable and in danger of collapse. Collapse it did sending brick and concrete flying across Chelsea St. in East Boston. There were no injuries.

I remember the calls on this building the other day. Kinda wish I was there to see it, but hope no one was hurt. Things deconstructing interest me.

Bigger problem here that nobody seems to be addressing. There is a history of crumbling buildings in this section of East Boston. Years ago when the MBTA tunnel was run under many of these homes, displacement of groundwater has resulted in severe deterioration of the wood pilings that many of these homes were originally built on. Sadly, this will be a recurring story on Chelsea and Bremen Streets.

Beginning at 8:00 PM Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon at 12:00 PM, Blue Line service will be diverted to substitute shuttle buses between Maverick and Airport Stations due to Boston Fire department activity. This necessary diversion will allow the safe demolition of a condemned building on Chelsea St. 10/15/2011 4:41 PM

How quickly could a demolition company come by and plot out a planned and safer demolition of a building?

Are you volunteering our tax dollars to pay for this neglect? I doubt the landowner is on hand to pay the bill.

and take it by eminent domain if the bill isn't paid.

Apparently this is affecting the blue line. Just got this alert:
Blue Line Weekend Diversion

I don't see how this would affect the blue line since it runs underground. One would think the shuttle buses would be more affected since these buses usually run down Chelsea street to get to/from Maverick.

Concerns about vibrations hampering the demolition effort, since the tunnel likely is right underneath.

It seems to be a vacant lot between two townhouses (the collapsed #47 and the still standing wall to the left). Did it burn down? Or was it similarly demolished as structurally unsound.

The absence of a side building and a supporting wall in the google street view seem to have contributed to the instability of the building (note diagonal cracks from doorway in Google street view).

49 and 51 Chelsea street actually (2 buildings) were ordered demolished a few years back for similar structural problems. The problem affects the entire block probably.

The worst part is that once they demolish those nice brick buildings, they are gonna replace them with some crappy wooden shacks made from sticks. Maybe with a fake brick veneer facade if you are lucky...
