Fire-ravaged Beacon Hill market could re-open wine shop in a month or so, owner says

Virgil Aiello said today DeLuca's on Charles Street could be back in the wine business within a month after receiving Inspectional Services approval - which his lawyer said could be any day now.

Aiello and attorney Terry Dangel told the Boston Licensing Board that renovations to the market - destroyed in a four-alarm fire in July, 2010 - are proceeding apace, even as Aiello continues lawsuits against Nstar for the basement short circuit blamed for the fire.

The two did not provide an estimate for when the rest of the market could re-open, but said the store's insurer has been good with funds, the general contractor is well along in plans, that the store has an all new alarm system and is getting a new emergency exit.

Dangel, who does not normally appear before the licensing board, emphasized he was acting more as a neighbor whose wife really wants to see DeLuca's open again and was not getting paid for his legal counsel.

Whenever I pass that wine shop on Charles Street or hear about it, I recall that in the 60s and 70s (and even into the very early 80s)it was a coffeehouse called the Sword in the Stone. It was a tiny, dark place down the stairs that had folksingers every night, and espresso (no booze), and was run by a rather eccentric guy. An interesting place. Nobody remembers it now.

I remember hearing Bill Staines play there in the 70s.

I can see him now trying to figure out how to get a cork out of a bottle so he can water down half and sell two for the price of one. The good news for him is that if the business doesn't succeed, he can always have another fire.
