Five Guys hiring for first location in Boston

Eagle-eyed Mark Hurwitz spots a Craigslist posting for jobs at a Five Guys going into a Summer Street location vacated by McDonald's.

In recent years, the chain had opened a number of its burger joints in suburbs surrounding Boston but none in the city itself.

A tad overpriced, but still a great burger and even better fries!

Get the "little burger," not the regular burger, unless you haven't eaten for a couple of days. And a single large fries is enough for three. Then the price is very comparable to McDonald's. And all the free peanuts you can eat :-).

Sorry about that, fixed, the original post.

Yes, it's Summer Street. Here's the Craigslist posting (which shows they're also opening in Chelsea).

I had heard downtown crossing was getting a Five Guys, but the map has the pin in the Seaport/Innovation District. SPID is far less convenient to my needs!

When I searched on "58 Summer St., Boston," it brought up a derelict storefront in Downtown Crossing. Plus, it's on some list by the Downtown Business Improvement District, which is basically DTX.

But, but, but, the Boston Business Journal reports downtown is getting TWO Five Guys.

will be even closer to my office, but that's going to take a couple of years, so we've got to nail down the specifics on Summer St.

It's been closed for a couple years and I didn't miss it at all (there are already McDonalds in South Station, on Washington next to Borders and on Tremont on the Common). Should be a good spot for a Five Guys, there's a decent amount of seating. Plus I have a personal rule about only eating beef from suburban McDonalds after some bad experiences within city limits.

The location you're talking about is across from the remaining open Wendy's in DTX. Its VERY close to intersection of Arch & Summer. I remember when this was a McDonalds, as I ate there once, and I was like eww because it was so cruddy inside.

Or the street view of the building.

That Summer Steet mcDonalds has been gone for years. It was filthy. Right next to there, back in the 80s, was a short lived pizza place called Pizza Pizzaz. It sold only pizza and soft drinks.. Nothing else. It had no decor whatsoever and was like a big warehouse with long tables. It was always packed at luch time. I liked it.

. . . and they are even good cold as a snack since I can never finish a "large" order of their fries. I love this place- burgers are great- fries great- hot dog even- is . . . great. Been going to the one in Natick on RT 9. This might not be good for me . . . having one so close . . .

Oh- and I love the free peanuts while waiting for an order!

They are delicious... :)

And I agree with about the Large Fries. I made the mistake with the large fries too. Because the picture of the cup is misleading. I'm used to McDonalds or BK where they always shrot change you on fries, but when I ordered a Large at Five Guys, I got the cup and a half of bag of fries....

. . . on a large fry order. Sometimes- there are more fries spilled over in the bag than in the cup itself!

It's fucking insanity.

Last time I asked them for a small and then I said just fill the cup and throw it in, that they didn't have to throw in all those extra fries that I wouldn't eat and the guy looked at me like I was crazy.

But then again, it's just far enough away from my office that I'll at least get a touch of exercise walking over there. I would eat Five Guys, five days a week, if my office were on the same block.

While their cajun fries are delicious, I wasn't impressed with their burgers. Better than a fast food joint for sure, and better than in-n-out burger.

I'd say skip it, and support our own local Boston burger joint: UBurger on Tremont

Really interesting ground sirloin Burger styles, great fries, delicious milkshakes and they also have grilled chicken sandwiches and some really awesome salads. Couple of locals came up with the idea after finding Boston lacking in burger biz. They deserve our support.

While I like your suggestion that we support the local boys, I put UBurger pretty far down the list regarding quality. Here's how I rank the places you mention, and I'll add in one more local for those who feel that is morally important. As for me, I prefer the best burger I can get to, whether or not the man who brings it to me lives in Boston.

  1. In-N-Out
  2. Five Guys
  3. b.Good
  4. UBurger

for sure, and there ain't nothing wrong with that!

But In-N-Out burger is literally the same thing that I could grill up at home. Makes sense if you're going to be away for a while, and want something better then fastfood, but i always fell like I'm getting stiffed there since I know I could make the same thing. My friend raved about it, but once there I was surprised at the simplicity. Thats deff part of the draw though.

I'm also not praising UBurgers hamburger/cheeseburger plain; but their specialty burgers and toppings. Something about them hooked me.

Nothing like a double stacked cowboy-burger with grilled onions and peppers.

How about Tasty Burger. I never been, but a friend of mine raves about it...

I haven't tried that one yet, but I am really interested in checking it out. I grew up in Los Angeles, where burgers are like bagels to New York. They are fantastic, they are everywhere, and there is nothing that compares anywhere else that I've been. Tasty Burger has the right look and smell from the outside. It really looks like it could have been plucked right off a street in L.A. and dropped down in Boston. The true test is in the bite, but I will find out very soon -- it's on my list of food priorities!

High calorie, diabetes-producing food and sugary soft drinks as well. Why don't they open a healthy burrito joint in that spot?

Yeah, downtown doesn't have nearly enough burrito places!

Have you ever looked at the calories/saturated fat content of what passes for burritos at some of our local establishments? Yeah, you can get a healthy burrito, but ...

LOL.

If you think Burritos are 'low fat' or 'healthy', you're sadly mistaken.

Sour Cream - nope
Guacamole - nope
Steak - nope
Chicken - Nope (because its lower quality chicken)

Rice - Too many carbs, cooked with corn oil.
Beans - Too many carbs

So unless you eat a burrito with no meat, just lettuce, tomatoes, and pico de gallo, its healthy. But over all, they aren't too healthy.

Plus I won't even begin to talk portion size of a burrito...

I'll caviate this and say.. OK yeah maybe verses a McDonald's burger, its healthier but still not by much.

Are no walk in the park either. Usually super-sized, stuffed whith white rice, guac, and sour cream... you can easily get to 1200 calories a meal.

Nothing wrong with a burger once a month. Several times a week and you probably have a problem. But same could be said for burritos.
