Forest Hills overpass replacement: For local drivers or people going somewhere else?

The Jamaica Plain Gazette reports a task force looking at how to replace the hulking Casey Overpass are down to two options: A bridge that would replicate the current traffic flow and ground-level intersections. State Rep. Russell Holmes, who favors a bridge, said the committee should hold hearings in Dorchester and Mattapan, in addition to JP, because of the overpass's importance as a regional route.

Thats like saying when a building is being considered in Charlestown they should hold hearings in Allston because the tax receipts and jobs that result may affect Allstonians.

The idea that some neighborhoods need to suffer from overpasses for other neighborhoods & suburbs convenience is 1950s mentality that drove people out of the city.

We just spent 15 billion on 93 and 90, use those.

Does it take even two minutes to get from the overpass to Mattapan? Dorchester, yeah, that's a bit further out.

Maybe I'll just join the other commuters in a slow crawl on the SE Expressway.

Obviously the overpass is a wreck. It's unsafe, unsightly, and a relic of the past. The reality of the situation though, is that the route is still a valuable travel corridor. There are many people and businesses that rely on automotive transport from the Brookline, JP, Mission Hill, and Longwood neighborhoods to neighborhoods to the south and southwest (and obviously the reverse).

Personally I commute from Mission Hill to Quincy and it's easier, faster and safer to take the Jamaicaway, to the Arborway, to rt. 203 (over the bridge), to rt. 3a, than to get on 93s. I split my trips between car and bike, so I use that overpass quite frequently, and I'd like to see any improvement that would not completely block the route.

I could live with a street level intersection, as long as there was only one light. In my ideal world the bridge would be replaced, but with the expense and delay of all city projects these days, I think we may be better off with a quicker solution.

I live in the wilds of West Roxbury, and commute quite frequently to the South Shore. This crumbling piece of scary infrastructure marks the quickest way to 93 southbound from home, and I reeeeally hope it doesn't get replaced by something unusably bad. I don't relish the idea of spending even more of my life stuck in traffic on 128.

Better still - gates around Jamaica Plain, to keep out the foreigners.

The Casey overpass is part of a highway system that happens to run through JP. It's not a private road. Decisions about it should be made by those the highway serves. The voice of JP residents has a place in the conversation, but to say the overpass should not be replaced because local residents don't like it is not understanding that roads serve more than those who live beside them.
