Baker, O'Toole advance to final in Dorchester; Lee tops Linehan

The Dorchester Reporter reports that Frank Baker topped the ballot in today's preliminary election to replace Maureen Feeney and that he'll face off against John O'Toole in November.

In District 2 (South Boston, South End, Chinatown), newcomer Suzanne Lee of the South End topped incumbent Bill Linehan of South Boston 39-35. David Bernstein at the Phoenix thinks part of the results are due to Linehan managing to alienate both Tom Menino and Michael Flaherty in the mayoral election two years ago - and notes the results are a rebuke to Chinatown's Frank Chin, who backed Linehan rather than Lee.

In District 7 (Roxbury), incumbent Tito Jackson is on auto-pilot and will face Sheneal Parker.

Latest numbers.

Last night it was impossible to find the results online. The city did not post them, nor did the Globe, and so far have found nothing on the Herald's site.

This is pretty awful, I mean who is covering Boston politics these days?

Make a damn phone call to the campaigns, they know the results an hour after the polls close.

The election was today, so it makes sense nobody had results last night.

#bospoli on Twitter probably had the results the fastest.

I wish Baker luck against the ruthless Menino machine. But given that O'toole & Linehan (both Menino guys)came in second, there may yet be hope that the most powerful mayor in recent history does not become even more so.

Both Mayor Menino and Councilor Feeney went all out for John O'Toole over the past week and he barely came in second...that has got to hurt...especially if Galvin comes out in support of Baker (which is likely since O'Toole, et al, did all they could to slime him)

Yup, they'll pull the same stuff with Baker. They hate Baker almost as much as they do Galvin. Wont work.
The mayor's machine has run out of gas and O'Toole would have been better off without them. People who like John will vote for Baker a guy they barely know in Neponset because they want to buck the mayor and his storm troopers. Big win coming for Baker and Marty Walsh, who is now the undisputed king maker in district 3.

I don't know how much credence I give to Bernstein's theory about Linehan alienating Menino costing him. If Menino has to pick between Lee and Linehan on the Council, I have to assume he'll stick with Linehan, since he hasn't exactly been confrontational against anything the mayor does. Even with the community center and library stuff, Linehan half-assed his opposition and waited for the State Reps. to do most of the work.

I just think Lee ran the better campaign.

Linehan's been against the ropes before, when he came in second in 2007 in the preliminary only to come back and destroy his South End opponent.

I think District 3 is a little more wide open, depending on how much of O'Toole's base was split by Galvin and whether or not they stick with O'Toole now that Galvin's out. I also think O'Toole has a horse face, but I guess that's neither here nor there.

Agreed. Votes against Linehan should not be construed as support for Menino.

Well if anyone thinks Southie will let a capetbagger move in and take over they are so wrong...Linehan will win in November.

I get the tendency for Southie residents to stick with a neighborhood candidate, but how is Suzanne Lee a carpetbagger? I-93 is hardly the Mason-Dixon line.

What makes Suzanne Lee an atractive Candidate is her compassion for People...Ordinary People. She has spent her entire Adult Life giving. A Carpetbagger she is not.
