The Globe reports a developer upset the law gives preference for a casino in the southeastern part of the state barely waited for Deval Patrick's signature to dry before filing a federal lawsuit.
This post kind of miss the juicier parts of the lawsuit - developer claims that the new casino law impermissibly benefits Indian tribes at the expense of a (presumably non-Native American) developer in New Bedford. Interesting to see how the Commonwealth defends that.
That developer doesn't seem to be rushing to develop all of New Bedford's industrial wasteland. Instead of suing, why don't they get off their ass and develop the area? Heck, they could develop areas near the casino and make profit off the casino traffic - more hotels, shops, restaurants, etc.
A casino is exactly what New Bedford needs to revitalize the area.
Actually, a casino will make it even more of a hellhole ghetto. See Atlantic City.
The hacks must be licking their lips! It's really going to be disgusting to see the chaos that ensues from here on out. Cronies kissing each others a*ses trying to get one of those $100k gaming commission jobs, casino big wigs sucking up to pols trying to gain one of these licenses, oh, and the pols sucking up to the casino big wigs in the hopes of getting a job a year (because they shot down the 5yr cooling off period because "that implies we can't be trusted").
I'm not one to get all worked up about politics, etc. I think there are a lot of good people who get involved in city/state government, but living in Mass for 6 years (and boston for four) has really soured this view. This has to be one of the dirtiest, most backwards political machine in the country.
