Group says 11 liquor stores in the North End are enough

The North End Waterfront Residents Association voted to oppose any efforts to increase the number of stores selling liquor in the North End, NewEnglandWaterfront.com reports. The neighborhood currently has 11 retail liquor licenses - one currently unused.

The vote has no legal authority, but the Boston Licensing Board, which doles out booze permits, asks neighborhood groups for their input on license requests. Both the North End association and its Back Bay counterpart have already set similar informal limits on the number of alcohol-serving restaurants.

is there any real correlation between number of licenses and police disturbances (noise, crime etc..)?

Actual question, not being sarcastic here. Has anyone actually ever done a study?

I remember seeing one that noted the higher incidence of car accidents and pedestrians getting hit by cars around liquor stores.

Don't you just love it when the free market determines things like this? Oh, wait...

If 11 is enough, then when a new one opens, it will push a higher-priced/less well-run competitor out of business. Saying we have "enough" of anything is ridiculous. Who are they to decide? Maybe a new place will specialize in craft beers...and I like craft beers. If that's the case, then I would like another liquor store.
