Homeless man gets 8 to 10 for stabbing another homeless man to death on Boylston Street

Kevin James, 44, pleaded guilty today to the stabbing death of Beau James Youngs outside the Copley Square Walgreens on May 1, 2010, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Suffolk Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Donovan sentenced James to 8 to 10 years in state prison after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter. James had been scheduled to go on trial tomorrow for Youngs's death, which came after James pulled out a knife during an argument and stabbed him in the chest.

Youngs, 22, had drifted to Boston after a troubled life that began when he was born with fetal alcohol syndrome to an alcoholic mother. After his death, his adoptive father scattered his ashes on a Virginia Little League field where he had one of the happiest moments of his life: a hit that won the county championship for his team.

Yeah- wow. Quite a story.

Sentence seems short for stabbing an unarmed man to death. I wonder if there was a lack of witnesses, or if there was a possible self-defense claim.

My bet is that the state doesn't consider the life of another homeless person worth very much and doesn't want to pay for costly food/housing/medical care of the convict in the prison system.

10 years is pretty common for manslaughter. Heck, you only have to do 15 years for killing a cop. http://newsblog.projo.com/2011/06/boston-cop-kille...
