Images of victory: The Bruins parade

The Cup

Biggest victory parade ever? That's what BPD is saying. Sure felt like it at Government Center, where a sea of jumping, chanting, happy people waited in the melting sun for the Bruins and the Cup - and then exploded into a chant of "We got the Cup!" when they arrived in a cloud of black and gold confetti.

Hmm, I think I was standing near this photographer.

. . . it was the biggest title victory parade I have seen. Bruins fan spill over alone into surrounding neighborhoods crushed that of other parades. Not even close from what I saw.

By far the biggest victory parade I've seen, but the BPD estimate of 1,000,000 people just doesn't make sense. Over a 2 mile parade route, there's about 21,000 feet of parade frontage (5280 feet/mile * 2 miles * 2 sides of the street). At a crowd density of 4 square feet per person (a crowded subway car is about 2.5 square feet per person, and the crowd yesterday was substantially thinner than that), a million person crowd would have to average 200 feet deep, on each side of the street, for its entire length. In some places (city hall plaza, the common, copley square) the crowd may have been hundreds of feet deep on one side of the street, but the average was nowhere close to that.

They stopped in the mid-00's for some reason which I forget.

The 1 million mark was the pre-estimate from the city/mayor (I think). People have just run with that.

In the meantime, I have NO idea why people keep claiming that this is the "biggest victory parade in Boston's history" or whatever (I swear Channel 7 was trumpeting that phrase like mad today).

Hello? 2004 Red Sox anyone? The route went from Fenway, down Storrow, across Leverett Circle, *into the water*!!, down both sides of the Charles as far as the Mass Ave bridge! I think that the BPD crowd estimate was like 3.2 MILLION (back before they stopped estimating crowd sizes)...it was insanity that day! There's no way this was greater than that. However, it was probably the 2nd biggest in our history.
