Inside the Roslindale substation
By adamg - 4/9/11 - 2:18 pm
Roslindale Village Main Street opened up the big old trolley substation on Washington Street for 90 minutes today so people could take a look inside and come up with ideas on what to do with the thing. Of course, we jumped at the chance to take a look inside. And yes, of course, I was one of those people one of the guides had to keep shooing away from the holes that could have turned me into the latest BFD rescue effort. Fortunately, I managed to avoid that and so am able to post photos from inside the substation.

It would make for a good
It would make for a good spanish restaurant
Especially one that specializes in mushrooms
Which they could grow in the half of the basement they don't use for their extensive wine cellar.
How about...
...an indoor farmers' market?
Yes Yes Yes!
Yes Yes Yes!
Or Maybe...
If they could get some windows back in there- an artist's gallery/studio space?
Lot of art
You'll need to sell a LOT of art to offset the $1,000,000 development tag.
subway museum?
while a restaurant would b great apparently several restaurateurs have looked and won't touch it w/o a parking lot. A T museum (maybe coupled w outdoor facilities at mattapan or forest hills for displays of antique rail cars) would b great but probly wouldn't generate the traffic to sustain it - would b nice tho in the home to the country's oldest subway.
There is a T museum, but it's
There is a T museum, but it's in Maine.
Why do restaurants need a parking lot? It's a city.
Also, is it really that hard to type "be" instead of "b"?
So use your money and open up
So use your money and open up a restaurant without parking.
I'm not interested in running
I'm not interested in running a restaurant.
Why does it matter? My point remains. This is in a city, and a popular business district to boot.
Wapo Taco, Imperial Kitchen, and Bangkok Cafe don't seem to mind the "lack of parking". Neither do most of the restaurants I frequent in the city, which happen to be in the same situation.
The "restauranteurs" were offering a phony excuse.
Parking in Roslindale Square
Tends to be fairly easy to find during evening hours. Plus, there is a municipal lot. Granted, all the way on the other side of the ginormous Adams Park ...
tiny keyboard
very small keys so yes every letter's a pain on the phone. as for the restaurant, I don't get it either, but several people in the biz seemed to think you need a parking lot to make it work. the 'hood can sustain little places in the square like the grotto and delfinos but u need to draw to support such a big space
Does parking in Roslindale require resident permits?
If not, people can just park on neighborhood streets to go to a restaurant.
Daytime Resident Permit Only
Street parking should be fine for restaurant goers.
Inside Roslindale Sub Station
I 2nd the indoor Farmers Market. All year long - rent out space to fresh fish, home-made jams, breads - there's a million possibilities.
beehive
why didnt they just let the beehive owner put a new restaurant in there? that was a great idea
