It just wouldn't be an election season without a Joe Kennedy reference

The Outraged Liberal ponders the latest speculation that JOE4OIL's kid might run for Barney Frank's seat. Complete with the obligatory Michael Goldman quote.

There's the whole Cambridge police record thing for crashing his jeep, drunkenly threatening to beat a few people up way back in the early 80s, and routinely mistaking his former wife for a punching bag, that he probably doesn't want trotted out again in the age of the internet. Being best buddies with Hugo Chavez, stealing oil from some poor people in one country to give it to other marginally richer poor people in another country, isn't going to make him terribly popular with a significant portion of the population either. Other than his last name, no one would even consider this chump for political office again.

Isn't there some other mayor or someone that would make a much better candidate as far as character, qualifications, and achievements?

Don't you have a Whole Foods somewhere to protest?

Because wanting a person in office simply because of their last name and family connections makes it okay to overlook their serious character flaws?

I think you got the wrong Joe Kennedy here. Outraged Liberal is talking about the Junior, not Joe4Oil. Junior is an ADA in Middlesex.

In a word: Duh!

Thanks, fixed.

JK3 is probably the Kennedy Dynasty's best hope to maintain the brand. Nothing scandalous about him has yet surfaced and he seems like a decent enough scion of privilege. Pulled a cushy Peace Corps appointment on a Dominican beach (ecotourism...yeah.. that's the ticket!) and has worked jobs that he probably could have gotten without his name (although that obviously plays into it a HUGE amount).

I would guess that even he would probably want to earn a bit more experience before leaping into a Congressional campaign, but the Kennedy's have never been short on chutzpah.

It's going to be hard to escape this baggage. Some people may not vote for Joe III because they think they'll get Joe II. (Just like some people probably didn't vote for Felix Arroyo Jr. because they thought he might run off to Venezuela chasing skirts).

The young fellow may have to make a name for his own self before the name of his predecessors is enough to get him far.

I'd at least like to see someone like Mike Ross give it a run. He has a pragmatic enough reputation/record and certainly an inspiring family and personal background. Plus, he's proven to be more than adept and attentive to constituent services and problem solving in his time on city council. Granted, he's not a Kennedy, which for me is neither an outright plus or negative, but I guess such things can tickle some folks around the Commonwealth.

I think he's probably saving his ammo for the eventual mayoral bid when hizhonnah retires
