Bobb reports he and wife Laura have now visited 182 of the Commonwealth's cities and towns. That means they have only 169 more to go on their quest to step foot in every single one.
It has been decommissioned - buildings ripped down - but you can bike or hike to it from a DCR trailhead. It is a pretty nice ride with kids, and has a multi-part geocache, if you are into that.
The others are underwater - and swimming in the Quabbin is forbidden, as it is for any reservoir.
If you want to read some interesting fiction about the last days of the Quabbin towns, Former Governor William Weld wrote a fairly lovely book called Stillwater. It is fiction, but it gives a good sense of how people lived in those areas prior to WWII.
That should help them make sure they visit all four towns.
A quaint old documentary on the four underwater towns was put together in the late 70's/early 80's with the help of some young guy named Ken Burns. Wonder whatever happened to him.
...to fulfill their quest, because they're not towns anymore. They might want to do it for kicks, though. It's a cool area to visit, and like swrrly suggests, bring some bikes to poke around other areas.
Wouldn't mind finding that Ken Burns doc. I've done a lot of walking in the Wachusett Reservoir area and it has some cool stories about it, too. Try building something like these reservoirs today - talk about NIMBYism!
Many years ago, I rented it on VHS from Pleasant St. Video in Northampton. It's also available at a handful of libraries in central and western Mass. Wellworth Watching.
why havent they gone to new bedford yet? when they do they should visit the southern part of town, I hear it has beautiful whaling museums and quaint cobblestone streets. the views of the ocean are spectacular especially late at night
Hate to sound like a drunk Mickey Mantle commenting on Jose Canseco's 40 HR's 40 SB's. Mick said if he knew it was such a big deal, he would have done it every year.
I've been to nearly every city and town on this map since 2002. Have never been to Cuttyhunk (Gosnold), nor one or two towns in northern Franklin county. Worthington has a nice town center. There is a great general store in New Salem and the old center of Hardwick looks like a Currier and Ives print. Avoid Marshfield; it is full of self important commenters.
I grew up in Marshfield. What gives, Costello?
Marshfield might not be classy but we've got a great sense of community.
At least we're not Duxbury. Or worse, Pembroke!
The locals are so quaint in their naive depictions of african americans, at least when one white guy is looking at another white guy jumping over a wall.
Kind of like a trip back to the 70s.
Always nice to show my kids that ignorant stereotypes are alive and well in places outside their usual orbit.
Your comment is mostly nonsensical, but I can relate to the sentiment. How can you blame those Marshfieldians for being racially insensitive? After all, they've never actually SEEN a black person.
My God, What is wrong with you people? The logic used above dictates that if I went to Chelsea and saw a person with a Lakers hat on, I must assume that everyone in Chelsea is a Lakers fan. I guess because there was a racial incident in Marshfield a few years ago, everyone in Marshfield must be racist.
I make a self depricating comment about me and the town I have grown to love and things turn into a hatefest. Nice.
3 tools being sent away for the incident at The Garlic. The Garlic has been sold in the past few weeks. MamaMia's is going to be moving there from Standish to there. Hopefully there will be no further assaults of JPers going forward.

Will they visit Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott?
If they're going to do all that, they might as well jump into the Quabbin and swim over Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott.
Dana Center is still there

Prescott is largely above-ground too
but it (now a peninsula jutting into the Quabbin) is generally off-limits to public access.
You can boat the Quabbin
You can rent a boat and go fishing in the Quabbin. http://www.mass.gov/dcr/watersupply/watershed/quabfish.htm

"Old Quabbin Valley"
Many years ago, I rented it on VHS from Pleasant St. Video in Northampton. It's also available at a handful of libraries in central and western Mass. Wellworth Watching.
Still available only on VHS
But expensive -- one can only buy a $95 version that allows public performance rights:

No cheap home video version.

Sorry, Costello. I didn't
Sorry, Costello. I didn't think sarcasm was that hard to decipher. I guess it doesn't translate well to the internet.
What racial incident, though? Was that the beating that happened at Brian's Place/The OnionGarlicwhateverit'scalled now?
