It's not even that they don't count - they don't play. For many away games, the 'regular' players don't even go. And for games where you do get the regulars, Tito will throw in other pitchers to test them out, leave them in for longer than he regularly might, plus throw in some other no-name folks to test them out.
So not only do these games not count, the team often not really putting their best foot forward. It's a shake out time.
Now if the Sox lose the first few regular season games, and fans say they don't count - that frosts me. :-)
