Boston Police tweet a "traffic situation" on the road has resulted in gridlock on the Jamaicaway, the Riverway, South Huntington Avenue and Centre Street.
I got caught up in a major mess at the mega-intersection of American Legion, Cummins and Canterbury; so bad I missed an interview in Dorchester with the snake-handling Red Line worker (didn't help much that American Legion down by the Haley was so badly plowed that parents dropping off kids were blocking traffic, but I blame the signals).
Do busses run on the Jamaicaway? No doubt they should, or trolleys, but i don't believe any lines do. I went down it in a cab last night and it was very well plowed, which makes sense: no parked cars, and wide margin areas to push the snow into.
Here's a link to the photos and a story from my site, JP Patch. "Perfect storm" is overused, but seems like the combo of badly-plowed roads, a manhole explosion and traffic light malfunctions did it.
I live just south of Forest Hills T station in the Woodbourne district. Taking the back way this AM to try and get to the JP pond area via ALH, the 203 overpass and the Arborway took over an hour from 8:30-9:45am. I didn't dare go straight through Forest Hills itself. Along the way, I noted the usual school buses with only one student on board, not to mention every car had one person in it... This city has got to get serious about: 1) timely and comprehensive snow removal 2) public transportation options that are more convenient, affordable and attractive than driving 3) efficient BPS student transportation policies and practices.
This morning, the police had Hyde Park closed off between Ukraine and whatever that hairball intersection on the other side of Forest Hills is made up of. It was unclear why, and the drivers were all clearly upset at being diverted, but the pedestrians were thrilled to be able to use the sweet, sweet snow-free pavement.
I know this is 3 days after the fact, but the reason for the back-up was a loss of electricity at Tower St. and Hyde Park Ave/Washington at 6:15AM on Friday morning. Big electrical explosion/fire underground that busted manholes in multiple pieces. There are still generators supplying power to several houses on Tower and businesses on Washington as of this AM, so the problem is not permanently fixed yet. and THAT is why I live so close to the Orange Line (and am mostly a pedestrian). Hardly ever have to get in a car/bus.

roslindale felt this too
Washington Street was a parking lot from Rozzie Square all the way to Forest Hills. What happened?
Backed-up even further!
The back-up went at least as far down Washington as Met. Ave. It took my bus 25 minutes to make it to Forest Hills, when typically it would be 10.
Wait, even further still!

Holy Name Rotary
Sounds like it went every which way. My wife said it took 20 minutes to get from our house near the square to the rotary.
Which bus were you on?
I was on the 50 that left Cleary Square around 8:15 -- I got to Forest Hills at around 9:00.
Nah, just missed that one
So I watched the next bus, literally 100 feet from the stop for 5 minutes before getting to board that one. I should have walked.
I just took a little nap on the (sunny side of the bus)
I figured I'd wake up when we finally reached Forest Hills. (I did).
Could it be, maybe, that they
Could it be, maybe, that they did a horrible job plowing in the last storm, resulting in travel lanes which couldn't fit two buses passing each other?
Not True
The lanes are there, the buses weren't.

Bynner closed
Apparently troopers and BPD have closed off Bynner between the Jway and South Huntington...what is going on?
Took 45 minutes to get out of
Took 45 minutes to get out of JP from Forrest Hills on the Jamaicaway around 9AM. That wasn't much fun
here's the story

This happened last week also
Traffic was backed up from the Jamaicaway to Canterbury on Hyde Park Blvd and to Healey Field on Washington.
Relive the nightmare with photos

Glad to be able to vent here...
