Motorcycle, car crash in Allston
By adamg on Tue, 08/16/2011 - 10:59pm
A motorcycle and a car collided around 6:00 p.m. at the trolley tracks at Commonwealth Avenue and Allston Street. Mingo, reports:
Just saw a guy on s motorcycle get hit hard by an SUV on the corner of comm and Allston st. He's conscious. They've got him in the ambulance on a backboard, but took his helmet off. He was conscious but in a lot of pain.
Kevin Fowler reports he visited the motorcyclist in the hospital and that he is fine aside from a few broken bones. He adds:
If you have any info about the SUV that hit him, let us know. He got knocked out in the accident, doesn't remember.

No sympathy.
Motorcycles should be banned.
Who asked you?
Just because your mom can't figure out which "guy with a Harley" ended up being your dad that fateful night doesn't mean we need to ban motorcycles.
Wha?
How about SUV's should be banned?
Just as logical a statement based on the lack of facts available.
Ban pedestrians too
Sometimes they get hit by cars... I have "no sympathy"
Stupidity should be banned.
Stupidity should be banned.
Motorycyclist was wearing a
Motorycyclist was wearing a helmet and protective gear. He was driving the speed limit, had the right of way, and was not cited as being at fault. The SUV was driving carelessly and unlawfully blew threw an intersection. Explain to me what the motorcyclist did wrong. He was obeying the traffic laws and his afternoon ended with tons of serious injuries. You are either a shitty driver or somebody who has an inferiority complex bc bikers are seen as the cool ones. Either way, you are ignorant, and have zero going on in your pathetic life that you have to anonymously smash innocent victims.
NEVER remove a motorcycle rider's helmet!
"They've got him in the ambulance on a backboard, but took his helmet off. He was conscious but in a lot of pain."
NEVER remove a motorcycle helmet unless the rider has stopped breathing. Removing the helmet results in an enormous amount of pulling strain on the neck unless you use a specialized removal tool which is slipped inside the helmet and inflated, pushing the helmet off the head from the top.
There's still no reason to remove it at the scene if a spine injury is suspected (and one was, if he was on a backboard.)
You'd think Boston EMS would be better trained...
You are an idiot!
Dear know it all, Boston EMS is trainned in how to remove helmets, and you can remove the helmet, and you should remove the helmet "if you know how to do it" in order to provide proper cervical spine immobilization, who the fuck you think you are to post you idiotic comments, why not you go to Boston EMS headquarters and ask one of the trainning captains if he can show you the proper way to remove helmets and why you should do it.
Instead of making your stupid comments, you should said, thanks to Boston EMS this guy is going to have a great chance to recover from his injuries with minor deficits.
I can not stand jerks like you.
Now kids,...
aren't we all missing the bigger point that if we lived in one of those "live free or die tryin'" jurisdictions where helmet use is not required, we very well might have been talking about a pine box instead of a backboard?
Basic First Aid
If someone is breathing and not bleeding seriously, but injured and/or unconscious, don't touch them. Direct traffic around them if need be, but don't move them. If they were thrown from a bike or motorcycle and may have a head/neck/spine injury, encourage them to keep still.
I did this for a cyclist who was doored and went flying over the handlebars, and was knocked unconscious. The panicky driver was insisting that the cyclist had to be moved out of the traffic lane, so I asked her if she wanted to accept the additional liability because neck injuries are common in such situations. The EMTs said that I did the right thing by leaving her where she landed.
Based on the SUV damage
Yes, it was entirely possible. It looks like the bike went into the wheel well of the car and the rider went up into the windshield in some way.
no darling , you're the ass
ass.
...
ass ass?
what if the helmet was one of
what if the helmet was one of those half-helmets, like the ones the police wear? or one of the "beanie" types the harley guys favor?
those can be removed without much force, although the head still changes position when the helmet is removed.
Helmet removal
The helmet issue is simple, if you are not trained to remove the helmet don't do it, and even if you know how to do it then what after, do you have a cervical collar on you? a backboard? straps? suction? are you going to be able to stop the bleeding or keep the skull fracture stable?
Let Boston EMS do it, the have all the tools to get it done right, the lady that kept the patient on the ground did the right thing, if you know how hold cervical spine and wait for the Ambulance, BEMS responds in an average of 4 minutes to priority 1 calls, i know it feels longer but is not.
There was another accident
There was another accident involving a motorcycle in the same exact intersection yesterday afternoon. Based on the configuration of the vehicles, I'd guess that a taxi turned left in front of the biker.
