Mr. Mayor, get the duck boats ready! The Boston Cannons are MLL Champs!

Down in Annapolis, MD shortly after Hurricane Irene cleared the area on Sunday, the Boston Cannons took on the Hamilton Nationals in the Major League Lacrosse final. For the first time in franchise history, the Cannons came out the league champions with a 10-9 victory. This is the 8th championship for the city in 10 years if you include all those other sports.

Mayor Menino, when is the rolling rally?

Nobody even noticed, but the Boston Militia won the 2011 Women's Football Alliance (WFA) championship 4 weeks ago in Texas upsetting the 11-0 undefeated San Diego Surge!

NINE championships in 10 years!

The Militia also won their league in 2010.

And the Revolution won the 2004 US Open Cup (not the same as the league title...but an all-comers tournament that is played at the same time as the regular season).

If you're going to throw in BC, don't forget BU! Though there was a parade on Comm Ave for that one.

I believe that makes us a 10-championship city!

Also, BU's championship was one of the greatest college hockey games of all time.

You think EBJ gave 'em all rides in his Ferraris (...at least, the ones his truck drivers didn't total)?
Or did he fly 'em to Foxwoods in his private jet?
I demand answers, Ernie!

It gets even better.

Nearly unnoticed except by its fans, (yes, that's our lot) the Somerville-based New England Nor'easters, the newest expansion team in the USCL, brought home the cup last year as part of a stunning first season.

The USCL season started yesterday with the New England Nor'easters scheduled to play their crosstown rivals, the Boston Blitz this Wednesday.

I seem to be the designated stupid-question-asker this morning. The USCL is...?

US Chess League. I wonder if the Red Sox realize the Blitz have co-opted their special B font.

Chess is a game, not a sport...except for maybe Chess Boxing (yes, it is real and it is spectacular).

Check out the tables in front of Harvard Square's Au Bon Pain some time, mate.

Sports Illustrated did cover the Fischer-Spassky match, so they considered it a sporting event. Of course, they feature near-nude models these days, from the sport of... of... well, OK, maybe I'm not making anyone's point.

Actually Chess is a sport - as defined by the International Olympic Committee.

But the Cannons appear to be happy enough that the Mayor is going to celebrate their championship with them today at 3:30 PM on City Hall Plaza.

Congrats again to the Cannons!
