Mystery: Smashed Boston cab in Cambridge
By adamg on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 10:25am
A roving UHub photographer noticed this unusual sight on Mass. Ave. in North Cambridge on Sunday, reports:
The strange thing: There were no other planters in sight. And you can't tell from the photo but it was full of dirt, too.

Trail of vandalism up Mass Ave this weekend
I saw that too-- it's probably connected with a pair of smashed building windows further east along Mass Ave in Cambridge. I'm guessing several drunk people went along the road breaking stuff.
The Boston-cab thing, is, I think, because several Boston cabbies live in that neighborhood and park their cabs there.
Was there a whale nearby?
Was there a whale nearby?
"Oh no...
...not again."
Paging Chicken Little...
Did the photographer, perhaps, look up? :)
Yes, he did.
Lecil, I am the photographer. The car was parked under a tree in front of what looked like a two-family home, which was set too far from the cab for it to have fallen from the second floor and land on the cab.
Thanks
The shadow in the photo made me think that perhaps the cab was sitting next to a multi-story building which perhaps had patios that the planter could have fallen/been tossed from.
I guess we're back to a mystery then!
Cabbie dispute?
Let's have some midday speculation fun.
Random vandalism - or Cambridge cabbies pissed about Boston cabs picking up in Cambridge (might explain the apparent lack of police involvement)?
In any event, I seem to remember some similar issues between Boston and Brookline cabs on the Boston/Brookline border along Beacon St. a few years ago. The respective police departments summarily collaborated to set up stings to nail cabbies picking up outside their licensed areas.
Still one of the area's worst features
The stupid little suburban cab fiefdoms that raise prices for riders and make it harder for hacks to earn a living just contribute to this provincial nonsense. Just create an all-encompassing metro cab zone already. No companies have enough clout to stop it.
Several Cambridge cabs are
Several Cambridge cabs are often parked in that area. Cabbies swap their personal cars for their cabs, and leave the extra car there.
Maybe one of them was annoyed that a Boston cab took "their" parking space.
Or
Or maybe it was just done by a drunk asshole who thought it would be fun to screw over someone who works for a living.
