Newton gets a new Web site

Village 14 is a collaboration between longtime local blogger Sean Roche and Greg Reibman, who is also a longtime blogger and who was, until recently, publisher of the regional chain that owns the Newton Tab. Reibman, however, writes the site is not a strike back at GateHouse. The duo aren't looking for ads, to start. It's just a couple of Newtonites who are really interested in the place and who love to blog, he says.

DIY hyperlocal isn't easy. My LynnHappens revenue spikes to an acceptable amount during local political races and then it dips down to just chugging along. If businesses are stuck in their old advertising habits, it's hard to get them out of it. I'm also partly to blame. I have a full time day job that takes priority. Then, there's LivinginLynn.com, where my... other musings go.

One thing I'd recommend to anyone - rather than going head to head with your entrenched online/print media, grab what they're not doing well or at all and run with it. Anchor yourself with a niche, fill in the rest.

I used to work for Greg, and I wish him all the best with this new venture. At the old CNC Metro newsroom, he was one of the guys who really "got" the Web and blogging.
