Newton teen party life not so glamorous, song suggests

The Herald summarizes the song if you don't want to watch the video, which ends in a suicide.

Unfortunately true

Over the last 15 years I've heard of the same behavior (acting out sexually, not the suicide) happening in Lexington. First it was stories from the older siblings of my friends, then seeing this while I was in high school, and later from my own younger siblings. And when I think about some of the things that people in my class did, I can believe that suicide would be considered as a way of coping with the shame come Monday morning. Some parents seem to think that the opportunities their children have or their devotion to academics is enough to keep them from making irresponsible choices. Girls unfortunately just have a lot to deal with (life), and it has only gotten worse.

'Acting out sexually' has

'Acting out sexually' has been going on for longer than 15 years - trust me. And each semi-generation thinks it's getting worse. It's not. If each sequential 'getting worse' had been true, the kids would be doin' it at the breakfast table.

I will have to trust you

I will have to trust you because I was not around 16 to 60 or whenever years ago. I only referenced the time period to be specific about what I was writing about, and because the adolescent experience of someone who is 50+ is in many ways not always as relavent to young people today. Also I don't think people are worse, the circumstances of modern life are however more difficult for young people to navigate on their own. I can't speak to the experience of boys, but for the young women I know personally, the media's influence on the time, and way, in which they believe they have to express their sexuality is real. I can see the difference between my high school days and those of current students who are not even ten years younger than I am.

No, the Herald has it wrong, as usual.

Not sure whether to blame the writer or an editor, but the headline "Rapper’s video slams Newton’s party teens" is simply inaccurate and/or misleading. (I wonder if that was intentional - trolling for page-views?)

One can't possibly listen to the song and watch the accompanying video and come away with that unsympathetic a take on it. The choice of venue there works, but someone could write a similar song telling a story of loneliness and alienation in the personal world of a teenager located just about anywhere.

I agree

What I took away from this vid was the message that well-off parents like the Newton girl's can't use money to substitute for the love a child needs. Her parents are narcissistic and self-involved, cheating and arguing with each other instead of providing the environment she needs to grow up right, and she plays her unmet need for love out in inappropriate ways. It's a very sad story, one I've seen before this generation.

If the rapper slams anything, it's parents who don't care enough about their children to put them first, or a lack of values in upper middle-class society.

Wow.

I typically avoid the Metro, but long story short picked one up today. Saw this video mentioned and didn't pay it much mind the way it was written about. But I figured UH wouldn't steer me wrong and decided to watch it.

This is actually a really thoughtful and sadly accurate statement about teens in this situation. Moufy has done a great job and this song / video is well done.

Thanks for sharing, as per usual.
