Not everybody watches the news

Boston Police report the arrest of a mother for leaving her baby in a locked car, just one day after a 17-month-old was found dead, abandoned in the back of a day-care van.

Police say officers on foot patrol around 10:45 a.m. were alerted by a passerby about the baby in a car outside 2201 Washington St. in Roxbury:

While approaching the scene, officers observed a large crowd gathered around a parked car. Upon looking inside the car, officers observed an infant child crying loudly and sweating heavily. Officers promptly called EMS to respond to the scene. In the interim, to ensure the safety and well-being of the child, officers employed the use of a 'slim jim' in order to gain entry to the car and access to the child. While officers were taking the child from the car, the child's mother showed up on scene and began hysterically crying and stating that she forgot that she had left her child in the car. The child was transported to the Boston Medical Center for treatment and evaluation purposes. The mother stated that she had been gone for about 20 to 30 minutes.

Idalia Grant, 27, was charged with neglect of a child.

Innocent, etc.

If she left the baby in an unlocked car, somebody could have stolen it!

...the car or the baby? Which would be more valuable on the black market?

I stopped judging after reading this: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artic...

(Warning: will pretty much rip your heart out.)

ETA: Yeah, she said she forgot. Ugh. That is absolutely my worst nightmare as a parent.

That was one of the hardest things I've ever read in a regular newspaper. Thanks for posting it but you've fucked me up for more than just tonight.

I wasn't kidding about the heart-ripping! I was legitimately angry at the friend who sent it to me because it made me so upset.

but I thought it was really beautiful to see something in a mainstream newspaper that didn't focus (much) on the legal aspect of the issue and just focused on how devastated these families are. I think they've more than served their time.

how do you "forget" an eight month old baby. i have a six month old baby that i look at every thirty seconds in my rearview mirror when i have him in my car. its not always convenient but he is unstrapped and taken inside for every iced coffee, slice of pizza, stop at cumberland farms (where i can see my car inside the store).

inexcusable.

how do you "forget" an 8 month old baby?

...that Miss M linked to up there. It explains exactly how, scientifically, it is possible for good and loving parents to forget their child is in the car.

i understand people get distracted and these terrible things can happen. does anyone remember the guy who left his baby in the carrier on the roof and drove away, not realizing what had happened until he reached his destination. i get it.

my question is what was the woman in roxburys excuse? was she rushing to an important meeting? runnning into an apartment to check on a sick, elderly relative? the guy in the article had a million things going on in his head and he fucked up, bigtime. what was this womens excuse?

How exactly do you FORGET a baby in a car? You just don't. You can forget your keys and lock them inside, but a baby? Why does this keep happening?

Of course I have no way of knowing, but I'd be curious to know if the mother was distracted by talking on a cell phone. You'd be amazed what people don't pay attention to while talking on cell phones.
