Occupy Thanksgiving: a cookout to feed Occupy Boston

A volunteer effort to provide food for the Occupy Boston tent city will be holding a Thanksgiving cookout at Dorchester's Franklin Park on the morning of Thursday, November 24, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Dewey Square does not allow any open flames at all, including charcoal cooking. Therefore, volunteers will be holding an outdoor cookout on the morning of Thursday, November 24 (Thanksgiving) at Franklin Park in Dorchester, in the area of the public park that allows outdoor cooking and grilling. Participants will be able to set up a grill, dutch oven coal table, or other cooking apparatus. This will be done in the manner of a tailgate party, with little to no permanent setups.

Regarding the question of why an outdoor cookout is being held on Thanksgiving morning: having a get-together in order to cook is an incentive to get people to cook, instead of just donating cold food. Also, this location is only 4-5 miles from Dewey Square (about a 15 minute drive), so that when the food is cooked it will still be hot when it is delivered to Dewey Square.

This is entirely a volunteer effort, and participants are being asked to bring food, cooking gear, and transportation to bring the cooked food from Franklin Park to Dewey Square.

Participants and volunteers are not being asked to spend the entire four-hour time at Franklin Park, unless they want to. All that is being asked is for people to arrive with food and cooking equipment, cook some hot food, and bring it to Dewey Square for donation to the Occupy Boston food tent. After this, participants will then be able to go and enjoy their Thanksgiving in any way they wish.
