Only longhairs named Sam allowed to pound coyotes

Wicked Local Brookline declares "vigilante justice" not the answer to coyotes fearful Corey Hill residents say keep them trapped in their homes.

Where's Sam when you need him?

..actually Ralph was a wolf.

Come on, that's the same actor who later went onto greater fame playing Wily E.

Ralph and Sam were sheepdogs who worked opposite shifts. They met at the time clock.

"morning Ralph" (ka-CHUNKA)

"Mornin' Sam" (Ka-CHUNKA)

I could never figure out as a kid, how any sheepdog, cartoon or not, could see ANYTHING.

not the other sheepdog (who didn't appear in every cartoon).

The "punching in/punching out for work" gag varied from cartoon to cartoon. Sometimes, only the sheepdogs changed shifts. Other times, Sam and Ralph punched in together. And, in my favorite variant of the bit, Sam is about to drop Ralph off a cliff when the "lunchtime whistle" blows. They both stop what they're doing and share lunch together. After lunch, it's back to work (i.e Sam proceeds to drop Ralph off the cliff).

As for the similarity of Ralph to the more famous coyote, in his autobiography, Mel Blanc (the man who voiced nearly all the Warner Brothers characters) described Ralph the Wolf as "Wile E. Coyote in drag".

That's right they did both punch in at the time clock.....the wolf and the dog.

I guess 35 years or so is long enough for me to go watch that cartoon again!

“This is the way I walk the dog,” said the Jordan Road resident, demonstrating by spinning a metal noisemaker loudly. “My quality of life has changed significantly.”

You heard it here first: coyotes are the top urban menace to be concerned about.

Also love that some actual facts were included in an article about the very concerned and hysterical citizens.

4 attacks since 1950, no deaths. Heaven forbid they keep their pets indoors, keep their trash in the garage cans, and stop putting out the dog food and cat food.

To be a fly on the wall in that meeting..

When people realize the "solution" they will be offered is to have city cops running around shooting at coyotes with, ulp, GUNS!!!!, I hope they will educate themselves a bit and start doing the only things that really work - trash control, pet food control, and pet control.

I had small kids when the coyotes first made their way into my neighborhood. I taught them that if they saw a "dog" like the one in the picture, they should slowly walk into the house and close the glass door behind them. (our yard was fenced, but ...) We had one actual "coyote drill" event and two false alarms for off-leash, ill-trained German Shepherds - and it occurred to me that those off leash dogs who weren't in sight of their owners were probably a greater threat to my children than any coyote would be.

We also had a problem owner in the area with a very nasty malamut that she would just let off the leash to terrorize anyone who happened to be outdoors. That dog aggressively entered our property and chased myself and my sons into the house. It had also tried to attack an older neighbor, as well as the couple across the street and their dog. I cornered the dog with a snow shovel and when the owner appeared I told her straight out that I would call the animal officer and have the dog impounded if I ever saw it off leash again, given that there were now six people in the area that the dog had tried to attack. I never saw that dog again.

UPDATE: After logging off here, I cut across the woods to lop a 1/2 mile off an errand. As I went up the trail with a flashlight, a "dog" suddenly jumped up and ran up the hill away from me. I think our local coyotes will, when lurking on a moonlit night, carry loud noisemakers lest they run afoul of one of those hideously scary two-legged travelers ... those terrifying night humans are affecting their quality of life!

That phrase does not mean what you think it does.
