Parents, teachers to get say in teacher evaluations
By adamg on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 8:41am
The Boston Parent Organizing Network reports the state Board of Education has enacted a rule that will require school districts to incorporate parent and student feedback in evaluations of teachers. Districts have until the 2013-2014 school year to figure out how to do this.

BPS already collecting such data
BPS has already been collecting such data annually through their School Climate Survey (for parents, teachers, and students). It is just a matter of time before they figure out how to use those data in the evaluation process.
Climate survey is not adequate
The School Climate Survey does not identify down to the teacher level. We completed this survey, but now realize that our responses will be grouped with the other first grade teacher, making the data meaningless for comparative or teacher evaluation purposes.
I would like to see a much more specific evaluation protocol and a serious commitment to getting meaningful response rates. Rather than make it all about scoring a few points to evaluate the teacher, we should collect suggestions and ideas from parents in the fall and follow up in the spring with more of an evaluation.
