People legally diving off a building into the harbor

Cliff diver

Jeff Tamagini took in the Red Bull cliff-diving tourney, in which participants jumped off a board extending out from the roof of the ICA down into Boston Harbor 85 feet below. Unlike other dives into the harbor, this had the blessings of city officials.

This event was very, very cool. I pulled together a 2minute video from today's activities on YT and posted it on my blog here, http://bit.ly/qTaFTK

Apparently they managed to rent out Gillette to let the divers play football. Also, the video intro is more like Welcome to New Orleans...

I dunno if I'd want to SWIM in the harbor, let along jump from the top of the ICA. EW

I'd rather swim in the fountain at copley square! (kidding!)

... then came the hawks and peregrine falcons.

Now the cliff divers have found our urban ledges and cliffs.

Let me get this straight. When Walmart tosses $2.2 million to Boston nonprofits, residents hear, "Boston can't be bought." Yet, Red Bull, that makes energy drinks that are far more harmful for kids than soda, floats $76K for City playgrounds, it has absolutely no problem getting a City OK for an 85' dive off a rooftop into Boston Harbor??? What City Department gave that permit?

And Nike is negatively influencing Boston's youth? Go figure.

President Obama had his Nike shirt on yesterday, on Martha's Vineyard, when he took his girls book shopping. Subtle message?

What the hell are you even upset about?

That the SBW is actually getting some exciting activity?
That our dramatic ICA is making a worldwide debut for something that isn't contemporary art? (Could be argued that the diving expo is contemp. art, but I won't go there)
That this is the first time the RB Cliff Diving has ever been done on the East Coast US?
That this is the first time they've ever dove off a manmade structure?
That RB chose Boston and effectively promoted our beautiful city worldwide?
That this exposes our city, including residents and tourists, to a sport that is popular around the world, but not so much in the US?

Since when does a manmade structure qualify as a cliff?

Whoever signed the permit, or gave permission on behalf of the City, to allow anyone, to jump off the rooftop, of any building, into Boston Harbor, made an asinine judgment.

Aren't there enough cliffs in the world, to jump off of, without jumping off rooftops of city museums?

You do realize this is a world-class organization that arranges this and not just some joe-shmoes jumping off buildings into the Harbor?

Don't you think that Red Bull Diving and the City of Boston did extensive safety investigations to determine if the event would be safe? The divers actually complained during the first day of test diving because the platform wasn't steady enough. It was absorbing the shock and throwing off some of the launches. They then fortified the platform by adding more stabilizers. Everything had to be perfect. This was a well-thought-out event and an excellent summer event for the City of Boston.

Your arguments are simply asinine.

Under what theory of government should one need a permit to jump into the ocean?

What's the problem? Seriously.
You don't like people diving off high places? Why? Just because it's something you wouldn't do doesn't mean it shouldn't be done.

There's a whole world out there. People are doing all sorts of things you might want to check out.

Personally, I give credit to whomever came up with this creative idea. Wish I could have seen it. Pretty cool.

First off, ICA is private property, part of fan pier also where all the spectators were, the spectators that were on the other side were on Anthony's Pier 4, also private property. Joe Fallon has now successfully done 3 major world class sporting events on his property that showcase Boston in a way that the city would never do. (Volvo Ocean Race, Extreme Sailing Series, Red Bull Cliff Diving). As long as they proved to city and state officials and BPD and State Police that they had a game plan no reason not to grant any necessary permits. By my estimates on seeing past events there were at least 5K people there, so there were at least that many people that wanted to see them jump off a building into the harbor and not a natural cliff.

All these comments and not one on how great my photo is!!! Give the photog some love people...winky face ;-)

Great pic and great location for the event.
i had the dates wrong or I would have been there.
The poster complaining it's not on cliffs is missing the point- An urban event like this allows people in the city to see the competition.

I don't know what you're talking about. The President wore a Nike shirt, regardless of the ludicrous fit that was thrown in Boston several weeks ago, over a few lousy tee shirts that no one would have even known about, had it not been covered.

To his credit, the President, clearly, didn't buy into the smear against Nike, that it was trying to influence youth into drug abuse.

He's committed to creating jobs, not running them out of town.

WOW do you really think that of all people the President even knows anything about the supposed Nike "smear" campaign! Something tells me he has more important "issues" on his plate.

And some people who can't? They like to cast aspersions, concoct ridiculous objections, and piss on other people's parade.
