Londonderry News reports a woman from Jamaica Plain and an accomplice whose residence was listed as "Boston" were arrested around 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 25, after a member of the town constabulary spotted their van sitting at a local orchard:
The officer discovered one woman near the car and there was reportedly another subject in the orchard still picking apples. It appeared the pair were filling "a bunch of boxes" and had already reportedly loaded about three bushels of apples into the van.

Baffling at its core
Considering the cost of gas, you could call an orchard closer to Boston and buy several cases of apples. At this time of year, that isn't an expensive proposition.
Especially now that they have gleaned themselves some court costs and fines.
Yep...

Outside the mainstream economy
Your reasoning only applies if they actually paid for the gas. Stolen gas is free in strict monetary terms.
Cheaper than wholesale
Based on the "bushels" they had already gathered one assumes their plan was to sell the apples somewhere.
Perhaps Haymarket?
They'd have the freshest apples there!
I doubt it!
I'm betting on Chinatown or Quincy!!!
they were probably just
they were probably just stealing on their way home.
