Police flood South End in search for break-in suspect; man arrested in alley

Police this morning are investigating possible housebreaks on W. Newton, Waltham and Upton streets, Shawmut Avenue and Pelham Terrace that began around 7 a.m. A man was arrested in an alley off W. Newton around 8:40 a.m.

Update: Somerville man arrested

Boston Police report arresting Daniel Ryan, 26, of Somerville in connection with four break-ins this morning. He was charged with four counts of breaking and entering in the daytime and four counts of receiving stolen property.

Police say Ryan tried to break into a house at 308 Shawmut around 7:40 a.m. but fled when confronted by the resident. About six minutes later, police say, he tried breaking into another residence on Pelham Terrace, where the resident also confronted him, this time inside his home. He then fled again.

One of the officers looking for him found him hiding on a porch behind 5 Columbus Square. "After a brief struggle, the suspect was taken into custody."

He's also charged with break-ins on W. Newton and Waltham streets, police say.
