Police seize several maimed dogs at suspected dog-fighting arena in Dorchester

Boston Police report recovering 11 malnourished, badly injured pit bulls, one dead dog and four poorly treated rabbits from a Mather Street basement stained in feces, urine and blood.

"After the dogs were released from their crates, several dogs were visibly limping while one, who could not walk, had to be carried to the animal rescue vehicle," police say in a statement.

Police say officers got a tip on Sunday morning about the animals at 56 Mather St. After a quick investigation, detectives got a search warrant and raided the address Monday evening, along with representatives of the Animal Rescue League.

Detectives observed that the dogs were either being held in metal pens, crates, chain link cages or chained to walls. The animals had no access to food or water and were sitting in their own blood, feces and urine. Detectives further noted that all the dogs were in poor physical condition, i.e., all had serious injuries including lacerations and torn skin as seen on their heads, faces and torsos. ... Detectives further noted that the basement floor was strewn with shredded newspaper and feces and the windows were all blocked with wood or other coverings to prevent anyone from seeing into the basement.

Police say detectives also seized equipment commonly used by fighting-dog trainers, including a treadmill, sponges and a 10- to 12-foot dog chain.

The dogs and rabbits were turned over to city Animal Control officers for treatment; the dead dog will undergo a necropsy. Also:

Detectives spoke – via telephone – with the suspect and owner of the dogs. The suspect in this case is currently out of state. However, he did confirm that he lives at the residence and that the dogs belong to him.

and I sincerely hope that you speak out equally against the senseless killing and poor treatment of cows, pigs, chickens, and other innocent creatures.
