The return of Fudgie the Whale

Boston Restaurant Talk reports Carvel, purveyor of soft ice cream and Fudgie the Whale, is going to make a second go at the Boston market where it slowly withered and died last time around.

They withered after having

They withered after having lasted for quite a while. I remember seeing one in Westwood for many years.

Carvel's whale and Santa Claus were identical

When Carvel was here last time around, they used to sell ice cream cakes shaped like a whale, and, at holiday time, an ice cream cake shaped like a Santa Claus head. But the Santa was the exact same mold as the whale, just turned upright so the whale's tail became Santa's hat. Nobody was fooled by this.

Cookie Puss can't be too far behind

Who knew Cookie Puss had his own Wikipedia page? I used to like the commercials with Tom (corrected from Joe) Carvel. The ice cream cakes have been available at Star Market / Shaws from a display freezer all along.

Yes!!!!

If only emphysema-voiced Tom Carvel was still around to do the commercials.

And yes, Fudgie was also Santa, Tom Turkey and the Halloween Cat. The next thing you're going to tell me is that they used the same molds for Cookie Puss and St Patrick's Day's Cookie O'Puss.

Yay!

My dad owned a Carvel store in NJ for 20 years. While I'm glad I can get cakes in the supermarket (and do every year for my birthday) nothing compares to a soft serve vanilla cone with chocolate SPRINKLES on it.

The chain as a whole suffered after Tom Carvel's passing. (Yes, Virginia, there was a real Tom Carvel.)

This is fantastic news!

Yes, sprinkles!

It'll also be nice to have a place where you can order a SHAKE and not have people look at you dumbfounded.

The only thing that could make me happier

Would be news that Brighams is going back into the restaurant business.

franchises

I just love how franchises open and close and then come back like its something new.

The article also states that Cinnabon will also be opening. I remember getting these at the Galleria not too long ago. (It was where the LIDS store is now)

Carvel will be a welcome addition, there's few places to get real soft serve ice cream that isn't 'frozen yogurt' now.

I wanted an soft serve ice cream a few days ago in Downtown Crossing (yeah yeah I know) and the only place was McDonalds :-/

Cinnabon? Wow

I remember when that was a major big deal when the Arsenal Mall opened.

What's next? Orange Julius?

Remember Pewter Pot?

And Mug n Muffin?

Get yourself to Norwood Center

They've still got a Mug 'n' Muffin. Haven't been there in three years, but I can't imagine it's changed at all.

haha

No. But man I'd kill for a few more Dairy Queens.. not just the ice cream but where they serve food! (the "Brazier" kind of DQ's)

and btw don't EVER try to look up the nutritional content of a Cinnabon Cinnamon Bun. Lets just say that HALF of one has more fat and calories than a big mac and large fry.
