Stacks of wax

Records, lots and lots of records

The JP Record Swap happened on Centre Street yesterday - with lots and lots of records. Mike Wilkins recorded the event (check out this photo of a guy with a portable 45 player).

Honestly, what's next? What do you collect? Plenty of people attend this event, and believe it or not, music fans beyond 'hipsters' collect vinyl.

heh I'm not a hipster. and far from it. (and kind of despise the group) I collect Vinyl because much of what I would buy is not available online or on a CD. Its either out of print, or was never 'converted' to CDs (when record companies were re-releasing albums in the 90s on CD format)

I'm kinda mad I missed this, there might have been some good Gems ;)

Funny that people collecting records are snarkily referred to as "hipsters" now. I still listen to vinyl and I thought it made me terminally unhip!.

... Record collectors were pretentious assholes with $2500 turntables and well-cultivated molestaches! Harrumph! Get off my lawn, etc.!

despite the snarky one-liner above, there were all types digging for all genres at this now annual event. really. and it's more than a sale too. record swapping, friend-making, and a generally underlying feeling of connection through music - music on records especially - was to be had. it was boss. oh, and btw, there were at least five portable record-players on the scene when i was there. and, for the record, they weren't just carried by "hipsters." keep your eyes and ears open around late april or early may next year to check it out for yourself if you'd like.

Liked the DJ spinning on the front porch, but just liked the record swap idea in general. I used to go to the WFMU record swap in NYC all the time and it's a great way to fill out the collection and meet new people.

I actually own a portable player too! Bastard eats D batteries like it's a famine.

I wish I knew about this before it happened. Also, why didn't this happen when I used to live there!?

I know that guy! He's a serious collector of vinyl.

And have moved them cross-country more than once. And I listen to records on a regular basis (my CD collection is pretty small -- in comparison). ;~}

My current turntable cost a bit over $100 and was made in the Bronx -- it looks a bit like a flying saucer (clearly made for DJs) but actually works pretty well.

Long live LPs!

I'm guessing that #1 was kidding.

Plaid guy is looking at a Tony Orlando album about yeast infections.

One of our usual anonymous assholes is constantly babbling about "hipsters" in JP, though he seems to have no idea what a hipster actually is.

I don't get the hate. Or rather, yes I do. Who doesn't hate cute kids who are interested in things and dress like they have something going on--when the haters themselves aren't that kind person and never were and always wanted to be--but couldn't seeing as they were too boring to give it a go. Also, the hipster haters hate youth because they see their own slipping away and they can't deal. Or is it some JP gentrification thing like everything else?

In my line of work, I deal with hipsters pretty much on a daily basis--I've been called one myself more than once, although given my current status as An Old, those days are largely past--and there are certainly aspects of hipsterdom that I find irritating. (The concept of liking things ironically has always bugged the shit out of me, for instance.) But no, said AA is usually bitching about hipsters in the context of gentrification.

OK. That's a good reason to hate. How about hating things ironically--is that possible? I'm going to try it and see.
