Standoff on a Revere street

Running cops

Don Martelli took a ton of photos of today's standoff on Dale Street in Revere between an alleged bank robber and a rapidly escalating number of heavily armed police from Revere and Boston.

Channel 7 reports the suspect, wanted for a June holdup in Malden, surrendered after five hours.

The contrast between the heavily armed (and presumably bullet proof vested) police, and the tons of people just standing around taking pictures, hopefully not in the line of fire if a firefight starts.

Don't know about you, but if it looks like bullets are going to start flying, I think I'd get out of the way until it's over and let the news photographers take care of it.

Two things

1) if the bullets start flying presumably most of them will be aimed at cops and not at random bystanders.

2) this is a chance for the cops to break out all their toys. I doubt most of those guys objectively needed body armor but this is an excuse for them to play. Even among the cops in the pictures you can see a difference between some of the guys who are in full riot gear to others who just have vests to others who are just in their normal clothes.

1) bullets ricochet, and criminals usually do not have good aim; and

2) the cops might have wanted to break out their toys, or, upon being told that they were responding to a situation involving an armed and desperate person with little to loose, might have decided that they would take every possible precaution, so that, like you and me, they would stand a better chance of going home to see their children and spouses tonight.

And the guys with the tactical gear on are the ones who would have to go inside to get the guy, and thereby stand a much better chance of getting shot at.

Sheesh.
