TD Bank to help West Roxbury maintain role as bank-branch capital of the world

The Zoning Board of Appeals holds a hearing on Aug. 9 on plans by TD Bank to tear down the Zoots dry cleaners at 1833 Centre St. and turn it into a bank with drive-thru ATMs. It will be right next to a Bank of America branch and across the street from a Sovereign.

Inexplicably, Zoots managed to replace a bank at that location on Centre a number of years ago.

Also on Centre and Spring streets: Peoples Federal Savings, Hyde Park Savings, Co-operative Bank, Energy Credit Union, City of Boston Credit Union, Brookline Bank, Mt. Washington Bank, Eastern Bank, Citizens Bank and a Well Fargo mortgage office.

Do I sense bitterness?

You could always move to Brookline Village, where there were about nine dry cleaners, the last time I counted.

Bitterness? Over a place I used exactly once?

Nope. I was noting that Zoots replaced a bank more out of amazement that somebody had apparently managed to evade the secret Centre Street zoning code, which mandates that only banks, pizza places and funeral homes be allowed to move into vacant storefronts along the street.

Time for add some more

funeral homes, too.

West Roxbury resident here. I

West Roxbury resident here. I don't mind so much that its a bank, I just wish it would be a 2-3 story building with a consistent streetwall instead of a drive through ATM. I wish all of center street was a tad more dense.

Drive through businesses do

Drive through businesses do not belong in the city.

don't forget..

Eastern Bank moved into the space Energy(?) fled, at 2029 Centre. (Maybe the worst parking lot on Centre?)

Only other one I can think of is the Boston City Credit Union in the Shaws lot.

Also, I think we're down a pizza place as well. Not that anybody cares, or even noticed as far as I can tell, but Papa John's looks like they threw in the towel. Same with the Ice Cream window next to it. That's what it looked like the other night, anyway.

Aha!

Thanks, obviously I had forgotten what replaced Energy when they built themselves a new branch down Spring Street (right down from where the Co-operative Bank is building their new branch).

Will I be able to park there?

If I want to run in and pick something up from Espressos?

banks

Now you know who's making most of the money.
