By adamg on Fri, 12/09/2011 - 8:12pm
UPDATE, 9:45 p.m. State Police have pulled a body out of the Charles River in Brighton, near the Soldiers Field Road State Police barracks, that might be that of the suspected shooter, a retired Bedford police officer. His car was found in a parking lot by the river.
Wicked Local Cambridge reports the slaughter at 161 Grove St. in a "domestic altercation."

Now that is some super special, reactionary, 100% fact-free ranting!
Cambridge = "city" = "gang bangers and illegal aliens", therefore ...
Not to nitpick, but I thought
Not to nitpick, but I thought Deval Patrick ran a Sanctuary Commonwealth haven for illegal alien drug dealing gang bangers.
(Condolances to the family of those affected.)
Don't worry, you're not.
"Picking" nits implies discernment and evaluation-- you're grabbing at anything.
Yes this is a sanctuary state for immigrants. That they are all gang bangers, or that drugs or immigrants or both were involved at all in this event is entirely your own invention.
Massachusetts is not a state.
Massachusetts is not a state. It's a Commonwealth.
Cripes.
one of those sentences is true
It's both, unless you are telling me there are only 46 states.
I too prefer the implications embedded in the latter, but statehood and commonwealth are not exclusive.
I don't know what the other
I don't know what the other 46 states have to do with this. Massachusetts is a Commonwealth, and where the word state is officially used, oh, hell, just Wiki:
Massachusetts State Police is one example.
Congratulations, by the way. Any humor in pointing out the ignorance in our original post on Boston.com has been lost by this point. It's a shame that the most zealously patriotic of Americans don't seem to have an elementary understanding of their government's structure ... and that others leap to their defense.
Cripes.
did you happen to read the
did you happen to read the first sentence of the wikipedia article you're using?
"The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is a state in the New England region of the northeastern United States of America."
I'm not sure what you're after with your semantic pedantry, or that last paragraph above, but know that this is in fact a state you are living in.
Since I didn't source with a
Since I didn't source with a link, you have no idea on wiki I got it from. (In fact it was the wiki on Commonwealths, not the wiki on Massachusetts, so how's that for pedantry?)
So, yeah. Next?
Cripes.
Commonwealth AND State
Nobody is arguing with your claim that Massachusetts is a commonwealth. We're just pointing out that you're 100% incorrect when you say that it's "Massachusetts is not a state."
The full title of the Wikipedia article you mention as your source is "Commonwealth (U.S. state)." The first sentence of that article reads: "Four of the constituent states of the United States officially designate themselves Commonwealths." Further, that article refers to these four places as "states." [All emphasis mine]
For some reason, you seem to be under the impression that the terms "state" and "commonwealth" are mutually exclusive.
(Yes, we can argue about the validity of Wikipedia as a source, but you named it as yours.)
I have it on good authority...
...that there are 57 states.
Sigh
I guess I'll have to explain the post you responded to. Cripes tried, but you still didn't get it.
riggs from my phone was poking fun at the Boston.com commenter. He was saying, tongue in cheek, that the only thing wrong with the comment was that it referred to Massachusetts as a state rather than as a commonwealth.
In repeating the comment, he was highlighting the ridiculousness of it.
And then you, pierce, went ahead and showed your own ridiculousness by completely missing the point. Your knee jerked so hard that you hit yourself in the face.
Nice job bro.
Suburbia - almost Belmont
Not to mention that this is hardly the kind of neighborhood where 'gang-bangers' or drug dealers (illegal alien or otherwise) hang out. Unless you know the area very well you'll think you're in Belmont -- the boundary runs down the middle of Grove Street.
I think do to the
I think do to the gentrification of Cambridge no Illegals could afford to live in Cambridge. Possibly an MIT or Harvard student that overstayed a visa after the finished school. Try were I live in Chelsea, a city of 35,000 that had 13 murders from El Salvadorian gangbangers killing each other. I am sure they all came here Legally and America failed to intergrate them into society, or at least that's what you probably think.
Which is what undocumented immigrants are
About half of undocumented immigrants are people who've overstayed visas. I'm guessing it's actually higher in this area, since we don't have much in the way of migrant farmers and such.

Any illegals who spell better
Any illegals who spell better than lamebridge are welcome to stay as far as I'm concerned.
You think...
the commenter will take it back now that we know it was a former cop and not a "gang banger"? Wouldn't that be novel?
Sheesh - and I thought the nitpicks were for the missing "d"
in Cambridge - which makes me think that I missed something. Did I miss something?
What a horrific event. I think that this is only likely to become more disturbing after some of the potential motives come out.
My condolences to the extended family and friends. It's going to be a difficult holiday.
