Wait a minute: How can an outbound train from Forest Hills already be full?

Martin Connolly reports some savvy/sneaky inbound commuters at Stony Brook and Green Street take the outbound train to Forest Hills, then don't get off as the train becomes an inbound one, which reduces the odds that poor Forest Hill saps like him can get a seat.

Should I admit I used to do that after Mets games back when I was still a New Yorker and, um, a Mets fan?

Ha, I would do the same thing, take the 7 back to Main Street. Did it also on the L sometimes back to 8th Ave.

... at least, during my high school days. Coming from Boston Latin, and eventually headed for Dorchester and Mattapan, we'd get off the Green at Park, take the Red to Charles, then always get a seat on the Ashmont train.

Riding the Green Line outbound through Back Bay, I've heard a few people mention that, especially on game days, they'll ride inbound to Govt Center and board an empty train there instead of waiting at Arlington or Copley just to watch ten trains bound for Auschwitz pass by with maybe one or two additional people able to squeeze in.

Did this on the Green D and B line all the time. It was the only way to get on the train during rush hour without waiting for a free standing spot.

I do this all the time when I'm outbound, because I get off at Green Street but have the uncanny ability of always getting on the outbound train that goes express to Forest Hills from Ruggles. It's way faster to go all the way to FH then turn around than it is to wait for the next train and fighting the swarm of people trying to pack into a mostly-full car.

West Roxbury denizens continue to leave their cars unlocked.

I do this, especially in bad weather. Less for a seat than to make sure I can even get on a packed train.

Whenever a train goes out of service heading outbound at Forest Hills the driver makes repeated announcements that everyone needs to get off the train and people act like "well, duh we have to get off the train here" but I'm always like "not really, people stay on board all the time."

Not too many people actually do this. Usually the only people I see who stay on the train at Forest Hills look like they live on the Orange Line.

When you think about it, it takes about 10 minutes from Stony Brook to Back Bay. You'd be spending at least 10 extra minutes riding to Forest Hills and back, including the down time while they switch directions. Not really worth it.

it's probably worth it if you value comfort more than you value time.

I believe swirleygrll was the first to do this...

Oh yes - I ride from Sullivan to Forest Hills and then back to Wellington so I can get a seat.
