Wait, the North End has weird crap to eat?

Andrew Zimmern

Alex Mellion, who took this picture, wonders why Bizarre Foods guy Andrew Zimmern was being filmed on Hanover Street today. Based on his Twitter feed, he spent much of the day eating pretty normal North End-type stuff, like cannoli and sfogliatelli at Maria's Pastry and skate at the Daily Catch.

You know that's interesting, I'm pretty sure I saw Alton Brown there on Saturday. Maybe there's some kind of food network thing going on int the city.

Zimmern is on the Travel Channel with Bourdain. I doubt either one would have anything to do with Food Network. If we could get Alton out of there and on to Travel Channel or elsewhere, the world would be a better place.

I say this with full knowledge that both channels are majority owned by Scripps.

Now that's a useful page!!

And far better than the rusty trombone page...

Not even the Daily Catch has weird food any more. I remember when they had fried eels on a regular basis -- sand eels. In size and texture, they were sort of a cross between earthworms and linguini, but fried.

how about the look on a newbie's face when they see the line at the Galleria Umberto? Or the weird look you get from them as you try to explain the wonderfulness of a pizzette and how it's mixture of meat, peas, cheese, and ham is the closest on will get to heaven that day. Or when you explain the gastronomic joy one feels when you bite into a panzarotti and the perfect blend of mashed potato and mozzarella cheese floods your mouth.

If that place ever goes out of business, I'd seriously consider leaving this town.

Gotta love a place that's open for what, about 3 hours per day, closes for an entire during an otherwise busy season, has great food for a great price and (must be) very successful.

And the mural on the wall inside is an absolute thing of beauty. lol

"haaaay ralphie! bon giorno, paisano."

this restaurant has brought me more pleasure more often than maybe anything else in the city.

. . . sardines become "werid". Got some younger cousins (20's) who saw sardines in my cupboard and they nearly gagged at the thought of eating them. I can' be the only one who buys King Oscar Sardines- cause they keep restocking them.

That sounds like an episode of Hoarders waiting to happen. Is your closet full of Electrasol?

Although King Oscar brand is a bit of a splurge (well worth it though).

I was turned on to sardines early in childhood. My uncle loved to snack them while watching a ballgame. When I asked him what they were, he gave me one (and a couple of saltines as accompaniment.) I loved it, and I became heir to the family smelly little fish addiction.

There is nothing quite so much fun as finding out a co-worker hates them, and then watching his or her reaction as you pop them into your mouth. It helps if you're willing to hold one by the tail as you throw your head back, wiggling the fishy over your mouth as though it were alive and kicking, then dropping it down your gullet while making a sound like a barking seal.

Priceless was my friends' collective reaction when I ordered the Fried Smelts platter when out to dinner.. they don't know what they're missing and DAMN Legal Seafood for taking smelts off their menu.

They are my favorite form of sardines. The other versions of sardines in oil, hot sauce, etc. don't provide quite the combination of fish, spice, salt and bite that mustard sauce provides. I do hoard them! Because very few stores up here sell the mustard variety I buy them by the case from the few stores where they are available. Oh, and they've got plenty of yummy Omega 3 filled fishy oil!

But then I occasionally long for pickled pigs feet, scrapple, fried hotdogs with peanut butter, et al. Thank goodness gefilte fish and horseradish are still pretty common.

I have a Jewish boss, and every year he brings in leftover Gefilte Fish for me after various feasts at his house. It seems it is expected to be on the table, but few eat it. He knows I love it, though!

Basically, the more something is like cat food, the more of eat I'll eat, I guess.
