Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink in Cambridge as main bursts

12:20 a.m. update: Water from the MWRA coursing through Cambridge mains is bringing the pressure back up. Jesse Kanson-Benanav reported: "My toilet water tank suddenly just started filling itself up."

A 30-inch water main ruptured shortly after 9 p.m. at Broadway and Trowbridge Street, sending water gushing into the streets (photo via Channel 7), causing major outages across the city (except in parts of north Cambridge).

MIT called in emergency workers to help protect buildings - in part by telling any researchers doing work with flammable materials to wait until the water came back on. Cambridge Hospital stopped admitting patients. Police shut down roads around the break - and had waterlogged cars towed away.

As Cambridge residents were quick to remind Bostonians during last year's aquapocalypse, Cambridge has its own water system, so the break didn't affect surrounding communities. Cambridge Police report the city hopes to connect to an MWRA main to help restore pressure.

Some more observations:

David Krancher:

The water has been shut off in Cambridge. Undaunted, citizens are flushing their toilets with extra-virgin olive oil.

With no water, Ana washed her hands in seltzer. With no water, Trinity Simons boiled pasta in beer.

Lots of us MIT alumni were gathered there tonight to celebrate the Institute's 150th birthday, complete with fireworks over the Charles River. Heck of a time for (at least some of) MIT's restrooms to go out of service!

During last year's water main break I lived in Somerville and this year I live in Cambridge. I just can't win.

They're working at 9 PM on a Saturday night?

not just at MIT but at any large university that has science and engineering labs. The water main break was probably just as disruptive at Harvard (maybe more so, as it was closer to there).

There was a similar break a few years ago -- I'm guessing about 3 or 4 years ago -- on Broadway just outside of Kendall Square. That one flooded out the lower levels of the Marriott parking garage, and left much of the city without water for a few hours as well.

I live just a few blocks from the pumping station at Fresh Pond, and our water pressure was lower than usual, but still serviceable. According to reports we heard on a police scanner, there was *NO* water at all in many parts of the city.

Yup. No water within the few blocks surrounding the corner or Trowbridge and Broadway.
I had to walk to Starbucks in H-Square just to use the bathroom.

Came home around 9:30 to find very hot, slightly dirty water coming out of the cold tap. Hmmm. Left it running (old building, old plumbing, who knows?) Normal hot coming from hot tap.

Hmmm, the heat is on (the crazy heating system here responds to outdoor temperature, and it was a bit chilly ... still ...)

Finally found out about the water main break, just three blocks from here. Lack of pressure in the cold line must have allowed nearly-boiling water to back up into the cold pipes. Mystery solved.

Oh, water was normal, though somewhat low in pressure, about a half hour later. Surprised people outside the nabe were so seriously affected when it was pretty minor right here.

Some of us in the immediate area are STILL without water, not sure when it will be restored. Most of the news stories seem to imply everyone is back to normal, but not the residents right around the water main break!

I hope the newly expanded Library and its contents were not damaged. Do you know anything more about it?
