What would Boston's look be?

John Carroll notes a maker of women's clothes is running different ads in New York and Washington - illustrating glamour in New York but power in DC. So how would you sum up Boston's look in women's clothing?

T-shirts. Casual. In a city full of students, the trend is more toward focusing on studies rather than fashion.
True.
A student dominated city means t-shirts. Though I have to note that it is not entirely true. International students, despite being students, dress very well. Also, hipsters... well... are being hipsters and they are usually students. They have a fashion that is not just the t-shirt.
Comeon...they'd show a woman
Comeon...they'd show a woman wearing a tweed skirt sitting in an oldschool study going through a stack of ancient books, all classy like.
And for men
Anything at all, as long as it's topped with a Celtics jersey or Sox cap.
Town or gown?
Town, a lot of the wardrobe is spectator sports team paraphernalia.
Casual, intelligent & self assured
We dress for weather, walking, and comfort. We are smart enough and self-assured enough to follow what we want instead of fashion.
I like being in a place where you snicker at the fashionistas instead of those who are not. There is nothing siller than watching those little darlings try to navigate snowbanks in 5 inch, $500 boots.

A roundabout way to say dowdy.
There's a difference between
There's a difference between dowdy and casual. I've seen both here. Casual, clean, simple and unpretentious is not dowdy. That said, in my opinion Boston is pretty much the most dressed down city I've lived in, especially when it comes to sloppily dressed men with their pants falling down and college students wearing their pajamas out and about in the middle of the day.
Could be summed up with
fleece, Merrells and chullo hats.
Not fleece-- cashmere
Cashmere is lighter, warmer, wears better and last forever! That's Boston style.
boring
People can dress for weather, walking and comfort without wearing the boring boston uniform. Everybody here looks like a complete clone of each other. It's as if you get off the bus and you're handed the standard issue North Face fleece and hiking boots and that's it. It's all about conformity here. You call it smarts and confidence, I call it lame and boring. Even Philly (where I moved from), which is definitely not a paragon of fashion, has more individuality than Boston.
And to be honest, the last paragraph of your comment sounds like you're not quite so sure of yourself if, after all, you need to snicker at other people.
But it IS funny to watch a
But it IS funny to watch a woman in ridiculous shoes navigate a slippery sidewalk. I saw someone trying to walk in high-heeled clogs when Boston was a sheet of ice last month, and couldn't help grinning. It's slapstick comedy in real life, brought on by excess vanity. It's not like they can't afford decent boots.
Since fashionistas surely spend a lot of their time looking down their noses at the rest of us in our sensible shoes, I think even the fashion gods might allow us to chuckle in their direction once in a while.
I see a lot of nicely dressed women on Newbury Street in cute coats and low-heeled boots. I seldom see anyone in too much makeup or a really loud, tacky ensemble, and when I do, It's probably a tourist. Very few Boston women commit those fashion crimes while wearing jammies and hiking gear, at least.

Day: Northface, Uggs, PJ-pants.
Night/bar/club scene: Skirts that show off way too much. Just ride the T on Fri or Sat night.
I think the whole concept of "fashion" is stupid though. I don't buy into the whole "you're so not in season" trend crap. Considering a large chunk of Boston is broke college students, the looks remain pretty utilitarian most of the time, but the people of Boston can really dress up when they want or have to.
If fashion editors really looked at Boston...
...the temptation to say Brooks Brothers is high, but outdated.
There is a lot of understated but classic styling in Boston, stylish but functional.
