You can bank on what's replacing the Uno in Allston

Eric Gittleman reports from tonight's Allston Civic Association that TD Bank wants to turn the old Uno at Harvard and Comm. Ave. into a bank branch. Going from one form of dough to another will require approval from the city zoning board, he writes.

Dam banks.

But I drove by there yesterday and noticed that there was an old faded marking on the building that had the name of the bar/pub that was there before Unos. For the life of me I can't remember what that was!

Either way Unos is already being gutted out so I figured the plan was already in place.

Agua, or possibly Aqua. It's hard to tell whether the second letter is a G or a Q.

Haha so I'm not the only one stumped by that. Maybe it went out of business cause no one could figure out the name

I was in graduate school living up the block next to what was then "Play it Again Sam's" when Uno's opened (guessing that must have been 1983 or 1984). A school friend of my wife's was going to be working there and invited us to their "soft opening" as she had no family in the area. It was a fun night of free food and drink (pitchers of LI Iced Tea) and as big a tip as poor grad students could afford.

As I recall, that Uno's was also among the first wave of businesses trying to stretch the more sophisticated Brookline portion of Harvard Street into Allston. It must have worked as when I lived there convenient banking was at the very low end of the necessity scale (as long as you had enough cash on hand to stop at Macy's/Marty's across the street).

Wow - that brings back memories. 3 movies with beer and snacks. What a bargain.

Does anyone remember how much the burgers used to be in the 80's at "Play It Again Sam's" in Allston? My husband and I used to go there and we remember they were a great deal but can't remember how much they were.

All their past meetings seemed to be on the third Wednesday. I'll check.

Meetings were temporarily shifted to 4th Wednesdays, and the upcoming March meeting will also be on the 4th Wednesday, March 23. After that it will be reverting to 3rd Wednesdays.

I was thinking that perhaps Bank of America was going to move across the street based on the fact that they just closed up the ATM they had a few doors down in that block of shops.

I was hoping for an IHOP. Oh well.
