Why did this situation have to be pointed out to the MBTA? Does the staff never check around the station to check for hazards?

That's pretty scary considering a number of other T stations use glass for the roofing. That's scary to think about that collapsing.

Google Maps Street View shows that it's a sloped roof at approximately a 45 degree angle. The sloping glass actually reaches up almost to the 4th floor of an adjacent building. So the weight and thickness of the snow wasn't as bad as it looks in this photo. But there was a significant chance of it all sliding off, and onto the people below.

The T has a crew over there now digging the snow off the roof into a dump truck. 10:30 PM
