$100,000 bail for man charged with setting fire where firefighters first thought woman's body was a pile of burning debris

Huan Yuan Li was finally arraigned in Brighton District Court today on charges of arson, assault with a dangerous weapon and hindering a firefighter for a July 31 fire on Fidelis Way in which firefighters discovered an elderly woman's body.

Officials have yet to release a cause of death for the woman. However, Suffolk County prosecutors said today that after firefighters and police managed to subdue and remove a scissors-wielding Li from what they thought was a simple kitchen fire, they made a horrible discovery - that burning pile was, in fact, the body of the woman.

Police charged Li with the arson and assault charges the day of the fire, but his arraignment was delayed as doctors treated him for both burns he suffered and for tuberculosis, the Suffolk County DA's office reports.

Judge David Donnelly set bail at $100,000 and ordered Li to give up his passport.

Innocent, etc.
