its guys like cody ross and kevin millar and bill mueller and mike timlin, guys that arent making the huge, huge salaries are the ones that are most likely to spark the team? the guys making 20 mil a year act like they dont give a f*** and the guys whoe really worked their way up thru the system are the sparkplugs.
and i know cody ross makes nice money but it aint carl crawford/adrian gonzales dough.
It's mostly because they're older and their peak is past. That's what makes Ortiz's resurgence so remarkable, since he's 36. Younger players are still laboring under club control, so they're cheaper and generally healthier.
Although, Gonzalez is hitting 0.442 this month... he's only 30 this year.
Schilling and the bloody sock. Pedro MartinezOrtiz and Ramirez smacking game winners all of 2004 and 2007 together and driving the heart of the team after Millar left. Mike Lowell was constantly seen as a sparkplug...making $12.5M/yr. There are plenty of high-paid players on recent Sox rosters that really drove the team well.
Now, don't think that I believe players are paid in proportion to their heart...but it's not a reverse correlation as you're suggesting either.
