BU forms task force to figure out what's wrong with the hockey program

The move comes on the heels of the second arrest in three months of a BU hockey player for alleged sexual assaults, most recently on a rape charge. In a letter to students, BU President Robert Brown writes:

The charges in these cases understandably lead to questions about whether the hockey team's culture and climate have contributed in some way to the actions of the two individuals. The University must address these questions and, if deficiencies are identified, make necessary changes.

It's a classic example of closing the barn door after the horse has tried to rape somebody.

Can we just say - UHub doesn't need the libel action, I'm sure - "alleged" somewhere there? Also, while "alleged rape-attempter" is awkward, it keeps the whole presumption-of-innocence American meme alive just a bit longer.

There's about 25 guys on the team. Two of them (one who had already been suspended from the team in a past season for violating team policies at a party) potentially assaulted women (both aren't being accused of rape either). Even if you want to claim that 8% of the team every year does this (and just doesn't get caught?), you can't say that "the players are rapists". You can't even conclude that these two players are anything other than statistical noise (how many years does the team go without even ONE assault charge? Lots.) and not indicative of anything happening at the team/recruiting level.

That's what the goal of this investigation will reveal. It's nothing like the Catholic Church where not only did their own investigations AND other investigations turn up dozens of cases of child abuse in multiple parishes, but there's even a plethora of evidence that they ignored their own investigations and buried the evidence by moving the criminals around within their own system with the intent of avoiding prosecution.

but former lacrosse player Katie Baker offered some insight into white prep jock culture and its proclivity toward dickishness and outright sexual assault. What does this have to do with hockey? Lots, especially if you're familiar with the lockerroom antics of the Milton squad.

Same thing that's wrong with the rest of society. Those that perceive themselves as being on top of the world think that they can subject the rest to whatever they want. The big man on campus is the big man in an office, is the big man in government, and on and on.

If they're not raping their fellow students, they're sexually harassing their office mates, or starting wars and shipping our kids off to fight their fight.

We have to keep questioning the power structures in our society.
