Chinatown building evacuated for structural problems

Boston firefighters and building inspectors are at 25 Harrison Ave., where firefighters responding to a fire alarm around 3:25 p.m. found a five-story building that seemed a little unsteady on its feet. An MBTA bus was brought in for 25-30 evacuated residents.

WCVB reports there are missing support columns on the lower floors (previously home to the market whose sign is seen in Street View?) along with huge fire code violations.

The landlord, who says he didn't remove any columns, will have to bring in an engineer and it sounds like majorly expensive repairs are needed to make it habitable. That is, it will stand empty until the city finally forces the owner to tear it down or it collapses on its own.

I thought they'd been doing structural work on that building already. no?

support columns are actually in the buliding's basement, not the lower floors.

They also noted that the owner is bringing in an architect as well as a structural engineer to review the building. After all, we wouldn't want support columns to detract from the asthetics of the place, now would we?

Does the owner own the building and also own V&E realty? Or does he sub-contract V&E to find him tenants? A lot of the V&E properties are in horrible condition. They also have a lot of vacancies. If you walk through Chinatown, there are a good number of their signs advertising vacancies.

bought the property in 2009 from James Yee for $3,530,000. James Yee bought the property in 1994 for $250,000. Yikes!
