DA: Off-duty cop was doing 68 with blood-alcohol level three times legal limit when he slammed into another car in Hyde Park

Richard Jeanetti, an off-duty Boston officer, was released on personal recognizance today at his arraignment for drunk driving and other charges related to a May crash in Hyde Park that sent a woman to the hospital with a broken leg and a broken vertebra, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Prosecutors say a "black box" recovered from Jeanetti's car showed he was doing 68 m.p.h. in his Tundra when he barreled into the intersection of West and Austin streets from the direction of the train tracks and Hyde Park Avenue around 11:50 p.m. on May 24 - just as a 21-year-old woman was pulling onto West from Austin Street in her Accord. The city had installed stop signs at the intersection, which has some bad sight lines because it basically sits at the bottom of two hills, only a few months earlier.

Prosecutors say Jeanetti, 35, who suffered head injuries of his own, had a blood-alcohol reading of .27 - more than three times the legal limit.

Jeanetti, who had his license suspended after the crash, pleaded not guilty in West Roxbury District Court to charges of operating under the influence causing serious bodily injury and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. He was also cited for speeding and failing to stop for a stop sign.

Innocent, etc.

I used to live on West street right near that intersection. You risked your life every time you backed out of the driveway.
It's on a hill, a curve, and there are lots of blind spots. Add speeding and city buses coming by, it's a recipe for disaster. The stop sign is an improvement but I would have preferred rumble strips as well.

When I read how fast he was supposedly going, I tried to imagine getting up to that speed there, and had some difficulty (we live up the hill, basically up DeForest, so go through that intersection a lot).
