'Damaged' woman sues over flatfooted sneakers

A Florida woman is suing Concord-based Vibram USA over its Vibram FiveFingers sneakers, claiming they not only fail to provide the health benefits the company claims, they can lead to injuries among people who fail to adjust their gait while using them.

In her suit, filed yesterday in US District Court in Boston, Valerie Bezdek does not specify how she became "damaged" while using the sneakers, but says she never would have bought a pair if she'd known the truth. She's asking to be named lead plaintiff in a class-action suit that seeks millions of dollars in damages and lawyer's fees.

She's gonna have a hell of a lot of people calling BS on her who wear Vibrams and love them. Yes, they're not for everyone. That's why there's literature included in the packaging that tells you how to acclimate your feet (wear for 2 hours or so every day for a week, then move up...) and most places like REI and CitySports will take returns months after the purchase if you decide you can't wear them.

Also, expensive? Mine were 95 dollars. Hardly a pair of chucks, but I remember buying $175 Asics when I was a runner in high school, and my coach, who had been an olympic-level marathon runner, had hers custom made for $300+ a pair.

I wear my vibrams almost every day that it's warm enough to. And when I'm on my feet all day at work, I can say that my feet hurt a lot less when I wear them rather than a normal shoe.

I go barefoot pretty much everywhere, but I find that the VFFs are not great for walking -- they're a bit too inflexible. They're wonderful for running, but I'd recommend something else (such as *actually* being barefoot) for something as low-impact as walking.

And yes, you *need* to ease into it. Listen to your body, don't make sustained large increases in your barefoot walking time without a 48 hr window to discover sore muscles.

I wonder if she has health insurance -- I've heard that lack of insurance might be a driver of these medical lawsuits.

Really? Shouldn't the lawsuit be over how ridiculous and stupid they look? Perhaps to put it another way, if man was meant to have feet that looked like a gorilla's, he wouldn't have evolved.

Can I sue the company because those things stink up the room when other people wear them?
