Does Boston have its own graffiti vigilante?

Graffiti

A vigilant citizen took a photo of the mess that is now the base of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at the top of the Common, writes:

More graffiti at soldiers and sailors monument - big party here last night. Cleaned up most of it.

The city responds the graffiti "will be addressed as soon as possible."

Of course it gets graffitied, that's where all the drugs are sold. You'd think they would station a cop there, but they haven't.

And the Civil War statues damaged in 2004 by asshole anti-war protestors in the dead of night still haven't been repaired and replaced on the monument. This city does a horrible job taking care of statues and fountains when some outside endowment isn't involved.

Occasionally, a ranger does walk up there, but I've found that they're almost as young as the kids who hang out there, so they're really not perceived as any kind of authority. I walk by there a lot in the evening, and the place is usually swarming with up to 30 or 40 kids. Most of them are good kids, but it would be foolish to think there aren't any deals going on up there, usually by older men. Tourists go up there and come right back down. It's a public park, and kids have a right to hang out there as long as they don't commit a crime, but there is a lot of smoking and drinking up there.

The area around the monument is constantly trashed along with the graffiti, and the park workers can't keep up with it. Seeing as this is such a high profile area for visitors, I think it's high time the city, perhaps in some kind of private partnership, or through the Friends of the Public Garden, should build an iron stockade fence around the monument itself to protect it from the tagging, and it would also help to have better lighting and security cameras installed, if they refuse to send a BPD patrol car around at night. It would also be a good idea to remove the stone benches surrounding the monument as well, as these suffer a lot of tagging too - all they do is promote loitering.
